A DEVICE FOR THE ANALYTICAL DETERMINATION OF CERTAIN COMPOUNDS
The present invention relates to a device for the analytical determination of certain compounds, e.g. pregnancy hormone (HCG) , glucose, drugs, antibodies and the like. The device will be described herein with reference to pregnancy tests but is not restricted thereto.
The pregnancy tests have so far been performed, e.g. with a so called dipstrip or a similar device. Said dipstrip has to be inserted into a device in which urine of the woman which wants to test whether she is pregnant is present. (In other tests a suitable biological fluid or any other liquid have to be present instead of the urine)
Said dipstrip is covered by a material which is specific for the relevant test. Thus, for example, if the dipstrip is to be used for a pregnancy test, it is advantageously covered by specific antibodies fixed on colloidal gold particles. Said antibodies detect HCG (Human Chorlonic Gonatropin) which appears in the urine when a woman is pregnant.
However, the standard methods are rather unsatisfactory as, e.g. they require the user to hold the dipstrip in the proper position for a while; to transfer it to another area, etc. Moreover, the dipstrip may unintentionally contaminate the surrounding.
It has thus been desirable to design a device in which the dipstrip can be used without causing the above drawbacks. Thus, the user should not have to hold it and could not make a mistake by dipping the wrong side, it should not have to be transferred to another area, there should substantially not be the possibility that it may contaminate the surrounding and cause a possible human error in laboratories by mixing samples, etc. Said device should enable an easy use, be simple to manufacture and not be too expensive.
There is known a device for the analytical determination of certain compounds which consists of two cups one inserted into another, the inner one being provided at the bottom with a small hole for the transfer of the urine being put into the
outer cup and a dipstrip being suitably located in the inner cup. However, this device is rather complicated and expensive to manufacture and thus does not meet the requirement of the device .
The present invention thus consists in a device for the analytical determination of certain compounds which comprises a cup having at the front a holder in which is located in a vertical position at least one dipstrip and at a suitable location thereof is located at least one opening for the entrance of the test liquid.
Advantageously in the cup of the device according to the present invention a label is adhered or printed at the front of the cup extending parallel to the holder or the front is covered by a printed material. Said label and the printed material should be open opposite the part of the dipstrip for checking the test results. The label or printing is advantageously made from paper, plastic etc.
The cup should advantageously be made up to a pre-deter ined height from a semi or non-transparent material, e.g. certain frosting, labeling or printing materials. The remaining part being suitably made from a plastic transparent material or of a printed material. The cup should in any case be transparent or open opposite the part of the dipstrip (s) to be observed so that the observer may check the result of the test from the outside. In the pregnancy test in case that the woman is pregnant two lines appear on the dipstrip, otherwise only one line appears.
In case that other tests have to be performed the number of dipstrips has to be varied in accordance with the specific requirements of each test.
The number of the entrance openings may also be varied.
The dipstrip to be used in the cup is advantageously a conventional dipstrip.
The cup according to the present invention is advantageously provided with a cover. The cover is either sealed e.g. (aluminum foil) or attached as a plastic cover.
The entire cup is advantageously inserted into a pouch made of any suitable material.
The cup according to the present invention may comprise holders having several structures.
In a preferred embodiment of a cup according to the present invention the front of the cup is quadratic, has a suitable shape and is covered with a label or with a printed material open opposite the part of the dipstrip to be checked. , the cup being provided at both sides of the front with rails extending along the height of the cup, in which rails is inserted a holder having a suitable shape corresponding to any of the front of the cup made of a suitable material and comprising at least one groove or parallel barrier extending parallel to said rails, in which groove or between the two barriers is located a dipstrip, at least one opening being present at the bottom of the holder.
The present invention also consists in a holder to be used as a device for the analytical determination of certain compounds, said holder having a suitable shape being made of a suitable material, comprising at least one groove or parallel barriers extending parallel to the height of the holder in which groove or between the barriers a dipstrip is located, at least one opening being present at the bottom of said holder, supporting members being arranged at both sides of the holder.
The shape of the front and of the holder may be, e.g. rectangular, quadratic, trapezoid, etc.
Said holder may be an integral part of the device according to the present invention or a separate device.
In another embodiment of the present invention in said rails is inserted a box made from a semi-transparent or a transparent material, changing transparency may be performed by a label or -partly by a printing material, said box being provided at a lower part with an opening for the entrance of the test liquid; at the front with a window substantially having the size of the part of the dipstrip to be observed or covering the whole area except the window area if transparent; and at one side with an opening through which a dipstrip may be inserted.
The non-transparent material • is preferably ABS, the transparent material is preferably polycarbonate, and the semi-shaped material is advantageously a frosted poly carbonate.
The present invention also consists in a holder to be used as a device for the analytical determination of certain compounds, said holder being a box made from a semi-transparent or transparent material, said box being provided at the lower part with an opening for the entrance of the test liquid; at the front with an open window having substantially the size of the part of the dipstrip to be observed. Through lower openings a dipstrip or dipstrips may be inserted.
The transparent material may be covered by either a label or a printed material covering the requested area, leaving the dipstrip open for observation.
Said holder may be an integral part of the device according to the present invention or a separate device.
The test is performed as follows:
Any liquid or Urine, in case of the pregnancy test is put into the cup. It passes through the opening until it reaches the dipstrip. There it can be observed after a short time. As indicated above when the woman is pregnant two lines appear otherwise only one.
The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings without being limited by them. (Identical parts appearing in several drawings will be marked for the sake of clarity by the same numerals) .
In said drawings :
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a device according to the present invention suitable for a pregnancy test;
Fig. 2 shows an upper view of the device shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a side view of the device shown in Figs. 1;
Fig.4a shows a front view of the holder of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 3;
Fig. 4b shows a transparent dripstrip holder to be inserted into the holder shown in Fig. 4a; and
Fig. 5 shows a side view of another holder arrangement.
The device shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and the holders shown in Fig. 4 comprise cup 1 to which label or printing 2 is adhered. Holder 3 is provided with groove or grooves or parallel barriers into which a transparent dipstrip holder 14 (where the strip is located) is inserted. The general holder is then inserted into
Cup 1 through rails 6 (shown in Figs. 2 and 3) which extend along the sides of Cup 1.
Label or printing 2 is open at that part through which the test results should be checked in the dipstrip. Holder 3 comprises at the bottom also openings 7. Semi-transparent area 8 is also shown in Fig 3.
The test is performed in that some liquid or urine is inserted into cup 1. Said liquid or urine should reach the upper level of area 8 (shown only in Figs. 2 and 3). Said urine after passing through openings 1 , reaches after a short time dipstrip 5. Should there appear 2 lines on dipstrip 5 the woman is pregnant, should only one line appear the woman is not pregnant.
The holder shown in Fig. 5 comprises box 9. There is present window 10 showing dipstrip 11. Dipstrip 11 is inserted into box 9 through opening 12. Box 9 is provided with opening 13 through which the urine enters into it.
The holder shown in Fig. 5 is a variation of the holder shown as part of the cup shown in Figs. 1 to 4 or in some other conventional arrangement for the performance of a pregnancy test .
