A method and a system for providing a reward for viewing advertisements.
Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a reward system for providing a reward for viewing advertisements in an on-line environment.
Background of the Invention
Increasing numbers of people are making use of the Internet. In addition, digital television will provide an on-line interactive environment where a viewer is able to interact with the multi-media content provided to them by public broadcast, cable, satellite or other suitable means. In all of these environments, advertising is or will become prominent. With digital technology a viewer will be able to fast forward past or bypass advertisements reducing their value and effectiveness.
Summary of the Present Invention
The present invention seeks to provide an incentive or reward for viewing advertisements in an interactive environment to discourage fast forwarding, bypassing or the like of the advertisements. ;
According to the present invention there is provided a method for providing a reward for viewing advertisements in an interactive on-line environment, said method including: providing a viewer identifying means for identifying the viewer; providing an advertisement to the viewer via an interactive service; providing a feedback means arranged to send a signal to a recording means when the viewer acknowledges the advertisement, the signal including the information identifying the viewer from the viewer identifying means; the viewer acknowledging viewing the advertisement; the feedback means sending the signal to the recording means; the recording means recording the acknowledgment; and
accumulatively allocating a value point in favour of the viewer, a plurality of value points being redeemable by the viewer for a reward.
Preferably, an advertisement identifying means is provided and the signal sent to the recording means from the feedback means also includes information identifying the advertisement acknowledged from the advertisement identifying means.
Preferably, in a first embodiment the viewer identifier means is a smart card containing the viewer's details. Preferably, the smart card is readable by a digital television, set top box or personal computer, so as to insert the viewer's details from the smart card into the signal. Preferably, the viewer's details include a subscription number for the interactive service. Preferably the unique number for each hand held device is recorded in a database retrievable by the recording means.
Preferably, in the first embodiment the advertisement identifying means includes a hyperlink embedded in the advertisement. Preferably, the hyperlink is localised to a logo included in the advertisement. In the second embodiment the advertisement identifying means includes a timing means for identifying the advertisement by the time of its presentation for viewing.
Preferably, in the first embodiment the acknowledgment of the advertisement is conducted by positioning a cursor or pointer over the logo and pressing a button operatively connected to the digital television, set top box or computer. Preferably, the button is of a remote control, a mouse, a track ball or another suitable input device for controlling the position of the cursor, or highlighted menu option. In the second embodiment the acknowledgment of the advertisement is conducted by depressing a button of the viewer identifier means.
Also, according to the present invention there is provided a system for providing a
reward for viewing advertisements in an interactive on-line environment, said method including: a viewer identifying means for identifying a viewer; an advertisement identifying means for identifying an advertisement viewed by the viewer when the viewer acknowledges viewing the advertisement; a feedback means arranged to send a signal to a recording means when the viewer acknowledges an advertisement provided to the viewer, the signal including the information identifying the viewer from the viewer identifying means and information identifying the advertisement from the advertisement identifying means; and trie recording means arranged to record the acknowledgment and accumulatively allocate a value point in favour of the viewer.
Brief Description of the Drawings In order to provide a better understanding, a preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic representation of a preferred embodiment of the reward system of the present invention.
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiment
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a television set 10 controlled by a set top box 12 that receives interactive content from a television broadcast, an Internet connection, a broadband transmission, a satellite connection or other suitable connection indicated by 14. In a known manner, set top box receives the interactive content, decodes it and uses the television to display visual content on the screen, along with providing audio content through speakers. A digital television or a computer may be used as an alternative to the set top box 12 and television viewer.
The set top box 12 is able to receive a smart card at 14. The smart card may contain, amongst other things, information relating to a viewer's subscription to the on-line
service. This may include a subscription number that can be used to identify the viewer. The smart card may be used to pay for the on-line service.
The set top box has a hand held remote control 18 that sends control commands the set top box, typically by means of moving a cursor, pointer or highlighted menu option on the screen and pressing a button to make a selection, in the usual manner.
Part of the interactive content provided by the interactive service will be advertisements. When an advertisement appears on the screen, whether it be on the whole screen or a part thereof, the user may click on the advertisement, such as by using the cursor or pointer controlled by the remote control as indicated at 20. In particular, a logo may be the focus where the user clicks to acknowledge that they have seen the advertisement.
The advertisement may contain a hyperlink which when activated by clicking on the logo will cause the set top box to transmit a feedback signal to a central recording bureau. Alternatively the advertisement may be identified by the timing of the depression of a button on the hand held remote control. The signal is created when the button is pressed. The signal may be transmitted straight away or a plurality of signals accumulated or merged together and sent in bulk.
If a viewer is registered for the reward program the viewer's details, obtained from the smart card by the set top box, are included as part of the information sent in the signal to the central bureau. In addition, information embedded in the hyperlink identifying the advertisement may also be sent as part of the acknowledgment signal. Alternatively timing information of identifying the advertisement may be sent as part of the acknowledgment signal.
The details identifying the viewer are indicated as 22. The fact that the viewer is registered for the reward program is indicated by 24. The insertion of the information from the smart card in to the signal is indicated by 26. Other means of
identifying the viewer may be provided, such as registering a viewer against a unique number or code stored in the hand held remote control device.
The details regarding the individual advertisement are indicated by 32. A dial-up electronic connection, such as a telephone line 34 sends the signal to the central bureau 36. The central bureau 36 processes the signal and stores relevant information. Each click (acknowledgment) on an advertisement is recorded and one or more points (this may depend on the value of the advertisement) are added to the viewer's total. The points are stored in the central bureau. Alternatively, the smart card may be used to store the points as indicated at 28 in memory 30 of the smart card before transmission to the central bureau. The tallied reward points may then be redeemed for a reward such as department store vouchers, free air flights, holidays, accommodation and the like, or they may be exchanged with other loyalty program points. Membership of the reward system may provide a number of benefits as indicated by 38.
Statistical data may be generated from the advertisements acknowledged and charges accumulated and billed for the advertising, as indicated at 40, 42 and 44. The reward service may provide a periodic payment to an organising body at 46.
It is clear that the present invention has the advantage of providing a reward for a viewer to view and acknowledge an advertisement rather than bypassing, ignoring or fast-forwarding past. This means that advertisements maintain their value and relevance. Advertisers can obtain statistical information on the types of advertisements acknowledged and what style of advertisement is most appreciated. Statistical information related to the user's profile can be calculated, such as the type of advertisement and products advertised preferred by particular groups of individuals of certain age, sex or other background.
Modifications and variations can be made to the present invention without departing from the basic inventive concept. Such modifications include the means of
communication between the set top box and the central bureau may, as an alternative to the telephone link-up, be a cable modem or other suitable transmission mediums. The invention is equally applicable to digital televisions, computers and the like rather than televisions with set top boxes. A set top box may be used to merely provide feedback and need not control the reception of the television. The form of advertisement may vary from being a full screen advertisement to a part of the screen to a relatively small thumbnail like advertisement. It may not be necessary to place a curser over or highlight the advertisement to acknowledge it. An audio component may be included in the advertisement. The entire advertisement may include a hyperlink rather than just the logo. Another form of identification of the advertisement, other than a hyperlink may be used. The advertisement, a link to the advertisement or a cut down version of the advertisement may be bookmarked and stored for later viewing. The signal acknowledging viewing the advertisement may be sent when the advertisement is bookmarked and/or when it is later viewed. The advertisements may be recorded or live when acknowledged.
Such modifications and variations are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, the nature of which is to be determined from the foregoing description.
