Abstract

Methods and apparatus for coupling a local computer and telephone set to a remote LAN and PBX system via a single data link are disclosed. At the local end, the apparatus includes a POTS emulator (144) coupled to the local phone and an ETHERNET subsystem (142) coupled to the ETHERNET port (126) of the local computer, multiplexing means (140) for multiplexing the data to/from the ETHERNET subsystem (142) and the PORTS emulator (144), and a broadband data link. At the remote end, the system includes a broadband data link, demultiplexing means for demultiplexing (138) ETHERNET and telephone data, means for coupling the ETHERNET data stream with the LAN and means for coupling the telephone data stream with the PBX. Methods of maintaining quality of service for the PBX connection are also disclosed. These methods generally include giving priority to PBX data over LAN data but also include the dispensing of tokens and the prioritizing of different kinds of messages.
