Abstract

The invention provides for a label such as a temper evident holographic or diffractive security label that consists of at least two separate microstructures (30, 31), one exhibiting a holographic or diffractive security image, the other a non visible non-diffractive structure which controls differential release of a reflector or semi reflector layer (27) to display a separate visual message upon removal of the label by tamper. The advantage over previous prior art devices is that both the diffractive message and the tamper evident message are encoded within the microstructure without any need for additional coating or print layers in the device.

Claims

14 CLAIMS
1. A layered label having at least first and second layers separated by a layer of reflective material, the first layer
5 being arranged for securing the label, and the surface of the second layer contacting the layer of reflective material exhibiting a microstructure having surface characteristics such that, if an upper layer of the label is removed, at least a portion of the reflective material at locations 10 corresponding to the locations of the said microstructure are removed along with the removed layer and so as to expose a visible pattern in the remaining layer of the label.
2. A label as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the 15. microstructure comprises an embossed surface of the said second layer.
3. A label as claimed Claims 1 or 2, wherein the microstructure is of a form not providing a diffractive 0 image .
4. A label as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 , wherein the microstructure comprises the second of two discrete microstructures, at least the first microstructure being 5 arranged to offer a diffractive image when located on the layer of reflective material.
5. A label as claimed in Claim 4, wherein both microstructures are arranged to offer a diffractive image. 0
6. A label as claimed in Claim 4 or 5 , wherein the said first and second microstructures comprise discrete microstructure patterns . 5
7. • A label as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the discrete patterns comprise discrete fine line patterns. 15
8. A label as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the discrete patterns comprise discrete pixel patterns.
9. A label as claimed in Claim 6, 7 or 8 , wherein the discrete patterns are arranged to overlap on a macroscopic level but not at a microscopic level.
10. A label as claimed in Claims 6, 7, 8 or 9 wherein the dimensions of each of the elements of the discrete patterns are just below the normal level of vision-resolution and are typically in the range of about 25-300 microns.
11. A label as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the layer arranged to be removed from the label comprises the said second layer such that the removal thereof serves to remove at least a portion of the reflective material underlying the said microstructure.
12. A label as claimed in any one of Claims 1-9, wherein the second layer comprises a lacquer layer and the said upper layer comprises a third layer.
13. A label as claimed in Claim 12, wherein the said lacquer layer is arranged to be removably bonded to the said third layer by way of a relatively thin release layer.

A layer member arranged to form part of a layered label, the said member having a surface arranged for contact with a layer of reflective material of the label, the said surface exhibiting a micro structure of a form not providing a diffractive image and exhibiting surface characteristics for controlling the selective removal of the reflective material from least portions of the reflective material at locations corresponding to the locations of the said microstructure.
15. A layer member as claimed in Claim 14, wherein the 16 microstructure comprises an embossed surface of the said layer.
16. A layer member as claimed in Claim 14 or 15, wherein the said microstructure comprises the second of two discrete microstructures, the first microstructure being arranged to offer a diffractive image when located on the layer of reflective material.
17. A layer member as claimed in Claim 16, wherein the said first and second microstructures comprises discrete microstructure patterns .
18. A layer member as claimed in Claim 17, wherein the discrete patterns comprise discrete fine line patterns.
19. A layer member as claimed in Claim 17, wherein the discrete patterns comprise discrete pixel patterns.
20. A layer member as claimed in Claim 17, 18 or 19, wherein the discrete patterns are arranged to overlap on a macroscopic level but not at a microscopic level.
21. A layer member as claimed in Claim 17, 18, 19 or 20, wherein the dimensions of each of the elements of the discrete patterns are just below the normal level of vision- resolution and are typically of the order 25-300 microns.

A method of forming a layered label having at least first and second layers separated by a layer of reflective material, the first layer being arranged for securing the label to a surface, comprising the steps of forming a micro structure in a surface of the second layer arranged for contact with the layer of reflective material, the microstructure exhibiting surface characteristics such that, if an upper layer of the label is removed, at least portions of the reflective material at locations corresponding to the 17 locations of the said microstructure are removed along with the removed layer and so as to expose a visible pattern in the layer of the label remaining.
23. A method as claimed in Claim 22, wherein the microstructure is formed by embossing the said surface of the said second layer.
24. A method as claimed in Claim 22 or 23, wherein the said microstructures is formed as the second of two discrete microstructures at least the first microstructure being formed to offer a diffractive image when located on the layer of reflective material.
25. A method as claimed in Claim 22, 23 or 24, wherein the microstructure pattern is initially formed by means of a holographic process .
26. A method of forming a microstructure in a surface of a layer member for use in a method as claimed in any one of Claims 22 to 25, and employing any one of a diffused laser beam, electron beam lithography or a two-stage optical technique .
27. A layered label substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings .
28. A layer member arranged to form part of a layered label and substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
29. A method of forming a layered label substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings .
