Abstract

The scanning receiver spectrum analyzer system is a system for monitoring the spectrum of RF energy on the upstream cable plant for the purpose of operating a group of cable modems in frequency bands that are the most interference-free. The spectrum analyzer surveys the entire upstream spectrum (typically 5 - 42 MHz) to determine the noise level at each frequency, and then weighing this data with current operating conditions (e.g. bit error rates) to determine the best possible alternative channel frequency for modems on an upstream node, and then waiting for a trigger condition to occur which indicates a need for the modems to change frequency.
