Abstract
The present invention is about application level protocol, which is partitioning large amount of information into smaller pages and preloading multiple pages as many as the preloading parameter, achieving flow control by the unit of page. The idea that user interface directly provides network flow control is extremely important part of this invention. This also reduces network traffic and loading delay. Another important part of this invention is based on the idea that digital moving picture is also sequential pages. So, we can add hypertext link to the digital moving picture. This part of invention is called hypertext coding and the new media is named hypertext TV or hypertext media.
Description
PAGED WEB PROTOCOL
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to communications protocol, which has been widely used for the web browsing and is expected to improve the way of structuring of web contents and reduces the waiting time to download web pages. A paged web protocol requires an extension to hypertext markup language (HTML) and hypertext transport protocol (HTTP). The paged protocol splits a large web page into smaller web pages and provides flow control by the page, reducing network delay and traffic. This invention also relates to computing hardware and software system adding hypertext links to digital moving picture. The invented system is named as hyper media.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Up to now, large amount of information should have been published in a single web page. It takes long time to load all the information of the large web page from a web server to terminal equipment through communications network. Very often it is not necessary to load all the information of the large web page for searching specific information in it. It is just waste of time and increase the traffic of the network. Furthermore, it is very difficult to index a piece of information in a large web page.
One possible solution to this large web page browsing is to divide the
large information into smaller web pages and load separately. Each page..
" I should be linked by hypertext link, but there is no possible way to search
through the whole information at a time and there is always network delay to
move each next page from a server to terminal equipment. The loading delay
between pages makes the browsing inefficient. This is because there is no
definition of sequential pages in current definition of hypertext markup
language (HTML) and supporting hypertext transport protocol (HTTP). The
paged web protocol of the present invention provides a way of partitioning a
large web page into smaller sequential web pages and flow control by the unit
of page by preloading sequential pages.
In addition to this problem, there was no method to add hypertext link
to binary data, especially digital moving picture such as MPEG. This digital
moving picture can also be defined as sequential pages of binary information
and there is a good technical potential to add hypertext links to or between
these moving picture pages. The paged web protocol of the present invention
is used to add hypertext links to moving picture.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
To solve aforementioned problems of current web communications, a
paged web protocol of this invention uses a new method, page
(<page></page> or <pgχ/pg> in short) as an addition to hypertext markup language (HTML). The information between the page method (between
<page> and </page>) can be text data or even binary data including digital, moving picture, and defined as being paged. Any paged information can be treated as an object in the extended HTML and HTTP. So, hypertext link can be added to or between the paged information. This computing operation to digital moving picture is defined as hypertext coding. This paged web protocol is not only applicable to HTML, but also to any hypertext system. HTML is the Internet standard, so the paged web protocol of the present invention is primarily devised for HTML and also relates to web server, web browsing terminal, and web browser To output electronic information defined as a web page on to a terminal equipment by use of the paged web protocol of this invention, a large web page is partitioned in smaller web pages so that each web page is loaded in much less time. Partitioning a large web page into smaller web pages and loading them separately makes it possible to reduce the loading delay of each page and browse large amount of information in much less time.
While loading and browsing a web page, next pages are sequentially loaded from the server to terminal equipment. This eliminates additional loading delay for the next pages. This preloading makes the web browsing more efficient. The web server and the browsing program can limit the number of pages for the preloading so that flow control by the page is achieved. For doing this, the web server should understand the paged web protocol and the browsing terminal and the browser also understand the paged web protocol of the present invention. It is necessary to extend
hypertext markup language (HTML) and hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) to include the paged web protocol.
The paged protocol of the invention makes the use of the Internet much easier as well as much more efficient. The use of the Internet becomes just like using conventional books consisting of many pages of information as well as efficient due to preloading.
The paged web protocol can be used to provide hypertext links to digital moving picture. This makes it possible hypertext broadcasting, which is more advanced concept than digital TV broadcasting.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Other objects, features and advantages of the invention, its organization, construction and operation will be best understood from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, on which:
FIG. 1 illustrates a network diagram where the paged web protocol of the present invention is used.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference numerals refer to like elements, FIG. 1 illustrates a network diagram where the paged web protocol of the present invention is used. Electronic information defined as web pages are stored in a web server 1. A user 4 of the information is
browsing the information in the server 1 using a web browsing terminal equipment 3 such as a personal computer, which is connected to the server 1 through a computer network 2 such as Internet, in accordance with the present invention. The web pages in the server 1 consist of various forms of information including text, graphics, still picture, moving picture, voice, music and animation. Partitioning large information into web pages and relating them only with hypertext links, the entire meaning and structure of the information become hard to understand. On the contrary, partitioning large amount of information into sequential pages like a book helps conventional readers to use the information more conveniently. In addition, each page can have hypertext links to various multimedia information and this makes composite structure of both sequential and by-link possible. The web browsing software in the web browsing terminal 3 has a parameter to define the number of pages for preloading. While the user 4 is reading a web page loaded from the server 1, the next sequential web pages as many as the preloading parameter are downloaded from the server 1. After the first page, there is no network delay to turn to the next page due to the preloading feature of the present invention. Especially, this feature saves time when the network is congested and it is far from the server 1 to the browsing terminal 3. Each page can be a separate file, or a file may contain many pages. The paged protocol of the present invention is not limited only to
hypertext markup language, but can be used to split any digital information by the unit of page and apply flow control by the page on any computer networks.
The paged protocol of the present invention is used for hypertext coding of binary data, too. Hyper text coding for digital moving picture is especially important. One or multiple digital moving picture frames can be encoded by the paged method with video option v (<page v></page v>) or in short (<v></v>). The encoded data can be generated from or stored in the server 1, and loaded to the web browsing terminal 3. The encoded data is treated as usual HTML data by the web browsing program in accordance with the present invention. The code for hypertext encoding could be anything but
<page v> or <v>, but these are recommended to follow the tradition of hypertext markup language (HTML).
The hypertext link between video frames is not visible to the users of the hypertext encoded data, but provides the users with the capability of click on the moving picture. Such a functionality of the paged web protocol is used to add hypertext link information in the broadcasting station and update the hypertext link information very often. The added hypertext link information can be updated every video frame or last until a new hypertext link information is added. The hypertext encoded information can be transferred through the telecommunication media 2 including the Internet. Such hypertext encoded information is treated as a single stream of information so that it can be stored in a single digital record medium including tape or disk. Also, the hypertext encoded information is suitable for broadcasting or multimedia contents sales.
The paged web protocol can be used as index information of large amount of electronic information. The page method can be extended to include the size of the video page so that storage and transmission programs can easily find the reference position without parsing the detailed byte pattern of the electronic information. For example, 256,000 bytes of video page is encoded as follows: (<page v 256000></page v 256000>) or (<v 256000></v 256000>). This functionality of the paged protocol is used for video streaming and calculating the position of the next video page.
The paged web protocol of the present invention is for partitioning large amount of electronic information into smaller web pages, and loading and browsing individual pages reducing the network delay and providing flow control by the page. The strongest point of the paged web protocol is that multiple pages are loaded by a single request and the number of preloading pages is also controlled by the preloading parameter, which can be set by the user of the terminal equipment. The preloaded pages are cached at the terminal equipment and eliminate the loading delay for the next pages.
Making large amount of electronic information into sequential pages like conventional books, the structure of content gets simple and clear and this helps the users to browse the contents easily without special education. The present invention will cause a great change of the conventional publishing industry using paper into the Internet publishing industry based on the web technology. Furthermore, the paged web protocol of the present invention makes it much easier to index each moving picture or frame of large amount
of electronic information like digital moving picture file by use of hypertext coding. Foe example, the 10th frame of a digital moving picture is indexed as follows; <page 10 v></page 10 v>.
As explained above, by inserting hypertext link between moving picture frames, hypertext encoding is completed. Sending or broadcasting the hypertext encoded information helps the users to access other information only by one click. By use of this invention, the user can connect to e- commerce site or initiate a call to the person on the screen, watching TV broadcasting program. Therefore, broadcasting, telecommunication, and e- commerce will be merged by this invention. The protocol of the present invention will replace conventional televisions (TV) with hypertext televisions (HTV) and come up with a new concept of hypertext broadcasting, which provides e-commerce and telecommunications capabilities as well as conventional TV program broadcasting. The conventional television is changing into bi-directional interactive hypertext TV (HTV).
