Abstract

A composite nuclear reactor assembly, and a method for fabricating the same, is provided. The composite reactor assembly is designed for use as a solid cavitation nuclear reactor or CNR. The composite reactor assembly is comprised of an inner reactor core assembly and an outer spherical reactor portion. The inner core assembly includes a fuel portion and one or more extensions that are used to couple acoustic energy from the driver assemblies into the reactor. The core assembly is combined with the outer reactor portion such that the fuel portion is contained within the outer reactor portion while the extensions extend outwardly from the outer portion. In addition to providing a means for coupling acoustic energy into the reactor, preferably the extensions are also used as a means of supporting the reactor. A variety of techniques can be used to join the various elements of the composite reactor assembly, including electron beam welding and diffusion bonding.
