Abstract

A system and method for allocating shares among plural account holders is disclosed. Account holders engage in qualifying tasks that are take place through a distributed computer network such as the Internet in order to participate in an offering such as an initial public offering of shares, a private placement, or a follow-on offering (210). Each qualifying task elevates the account holder's ranking and/or number of position points (230). Shares are allocated to those account holders who have indicated interest in participating (260) in the offering on the basis of their ranking and/or number of position points (240). The account holder's ranking or number of position points, or both, can be decremented after been allocated shares to better ensure that other account holders will be able to participate in future offerings (250). The invention is preferably implemented by a program running on a server connected to an account-holder database as well as a distributed computer network such as the Internet.
