AN ADVERTISING SYSTEM AND METHOD USING SCREEN SAVER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an advertising system and method using a screen saver, in more particular, to an advertising system and method using a screen saver, which includes an advertisement provided by a specific advertiser in a screen saver program used for protecting a computer monitor, confirms that a user sees the advertisement while using the screen saver and compensate the user for viewing the advertisement, to thereby induce and display advertisements.
2. Description of the Related Art
With the increase in using of computers and their monitors, screen savers for protecting the monitors are widely distributed. The screen saver which is a kind of program for protecting the computer monitor prevents the life of the monitor from being shortened by destruction of the fluorescent plane thereof due to continuous impact of electrons radiated from a monitor coil on the fluorescent plane while the monitor is in still screen state. That is, when there is no key input from the keyboard of the computer for a predetermined period of time, this is detected and a specific character line, figure or logo is automatically displayed on the monitor of the computer, to protect it. Upon detection of an input from the keyboard, the screen saver stops its operation to display the previous screen. This screen saver program is on sale or is provided as a bundle with other software. Conventionally, the screen saver has not been used for other purposes, especially, advertising, but for protection of the computer monitor.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an advertising system and method using a screen saver, which includes an advertisement provided by a specific advertiser in a screen saver program used for protecting a computer monitor, confirms that a user sees the advertisement while using the screen saver and compensate the user for viewing the advertisement, to thereby induce and display advertisements.
To accomplish the object of the present invention, there is provided an advertising system and method using a screen saver, which displays an advertisement provided by a specific advertiser on a screen saver used for protecting the monitor of a user's computer, calculates a period of time during which the user saw the advertisement displayed on the screen saver in the week or month to accumulate it, and transmits the accumulated period of time to an advertising company or a service agency through an electronic mail or access of its home page, to pay a charge to the user, which is proportional to the period of time used for viewing the advertisement. The user may be compensated for viewing the advertisement in such a manner that the charge paid for buying the screen saver program returns to him/her in proportion to the period of time used for seeing the advertisement displayed on the screen saver.
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided an advertising system using a screen saver, which includes a terminal, a server and an opened network connecting the terminal and server to each other, wherein the terminal comprises: a display for displaying a working screen of a program or displaying the content of a screen saver advertisement; an input device for inputting data; a screen saver advertisement database for storing the content of the screen saver advertisement
displayed on the display; a database for storing the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement on the display or/and a period of time during which the screen saver advertisement is displayed on the display; an input time module for measuring a period of time during which the input device is not used; a screen saver operating module for displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement stored in the screen saver advertisement database on the display when the period of time during which the input device is not used is longer than a predetermined period of time previously set; an automatic calculation module for measuring the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement and/or the period of time during which it is displayed on the display, to store it in the database for storing the number of times of displaying and/or the period of time; and a central processing unit including a transmission module for transmitting the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement and/or the period of time during which it is displayed on the display to the server through the opened network, and the server comprises: a subscriber information database for storing basic information on subscribers thereof and a consideration; and a compensation module for converting the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement and/or the period of time during which it is displayed on the display into a predetermined amount of cyber money, to update the consideration of the subscriber information database. The transmission module is an electronic mail transmitting program.
The automatic calculation module calculates the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement and/or the period of time during which it is displayed on the display in terms of a predetermined unit time, to store it in the database for storing the number of times of displaying and/or the period of time.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an advertising system using a screen saver, which includes a terminal, a server and an opened network connecting the terminal and server to each other, wherein the terminal comprises: a display for displaying a working screen of a program or displaying the content of a screen saver advertisement; an input device for inputting data; a screen saver advertisement database for storing the content of the screen saver advertisement displayed on the display; a database for storing the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement on the display or/and a period of time during which the screen saver advertisement is displayed on the display; an input time module for measuring a period of time during which the input device is not used; a screen saver operating module for displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement stored in the screen saver advertisement database on the display when the period of time during which the input device is not used is longer than a predetermined period of time previously set; and an automatic calculation module for measuring the period of time during which the content of the screen saver advertisement is displayed on the display to store it in the database for storing the number of times of displaying and/or the period of time, and the server comprises: a subscriber information database for storing basic information on subscribers thereof and a consideration; a searching module for automatically searching the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement on the display or/and the period of time during which the screen saver advertisement is displayed on the display, stored in the database of the terminal; and a compensation module for converting the number of times of displaying the content of the screen saver advertisement and/or the period of time during which it is displayed on the display into the consideration, to update the consideration of the
subscriber information database.
The server further comprises: a screen saver advertisement database for storing the content of a screen saver advertisement; and an advertisement transmission module for transmitting the content of the screen saver advertisement stored in the screen saver advertisement database to the terminal through the opened network, to store it in the screen saver advertisement database of the terminal.
The content of the advertisement stored in the screen saver advertisement database, the automatic calculation module and the transmission module are provided as a bundle of a specific software. The consideration is cyber money.
According to a still another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an advertising method using a screen saver, comprising the steps of: an input time module included in a terminal measuring a period of time during which the input device of the terminal is not used; a screen saver operating module included in the terminal displaying an advertisement stored in the terminal on a display of the terminal when the period of time during which the input device is not used is longer than a predetermined period of time previously set; an automatic calculation module included in the terminal measuring the amount of displaying the advertisement, to store it in the terminal; a transmission module included in the terminal transmitting the amount of displaying the advertisement to a server connected to an opened network using this opened network, to store it in the server; and the server converting the amount of displaying the advertisement into a predetermined amount of consideration and storing it.
The transmission module is an electronic mail transmitting program. According to a yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an
advertising method using a screen saver, comprising the steps of: an input time module included in a terminal measuring a period of time during which the input device of the terminal is not used; a screen saver operating module included in the terminal displaying an advertisement stored in the terminal on a display of the terminal when the period of time during which the input device is not used is longer than a predetermined period of time previously set; an automatic calculation module included in the terminal measuring the amount of displaying the advertisement, to store it in the terminal; a searching module included in a server automatically searching the amount of displaying the advertisement stored in the terminal through an opened network, to store it in the server; and a compensation module included in the server converting the amount of displaying the advertisement into a consideration, to store the consideration.
The amount of displaying the advertisement corresponds to a period of time during which the advertisement is displayed on the display, and the automatic calculation module calculates this period of time by the week or month. The automatic calculation module and the transmission module included in the terminal and the content of the screen saver advertisement are downloaded from the server through the opened network according to the module and advertisement transmission module included in the server.
The automatic calculation module and the transmission module included in the terminal and the content of the screen saver advertisement are provided as a bundle of a specific program, to be set in the terminal.
The consideration is cyber money.
The amount of displaying the advertisement corresponds to the number of times of downloading the screen saver advertisement from the server, and the
consideration is converted in proportion to the number of times of downloading.
According to the present invention described as above, an advertisement provided by a specific advertiser is included in a screen saver program used for protecting the monitor of a user's computer, and it is confirmed that the user views the advertisement while using the screen saver, to compensate the user for seeing it, thereby inducing and displaying advertisements.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT An advertising system and method using a screen saver according to the present invention is explained below with reference to the attached drawings.
The advertising system and method of the present invention includes an advertisement provided by a specific advertise in a screen saver which is a program for protecting the monitor of a user's computer to display the advertisement on the screen saver, measures a period of time during which the user viewed the advertisement, to compensate the user for seeing it, promoting advertising effect. In the advertising system and method of the present invention, an advertisement provided by a specific advertiser is displayed on a screen saver for protecting the monitor 10 of a user's computer, a period of time during which the user saw the advertisement is calculated by the week or month to be accumulated, and then the accumulated one is transmitted
to an advertising company or service agency through an electronic mail or access of its home page, to thereby compensate the user for viewing the advertisement with a charge which is proportional to the period of time used for seeing the advertisement.
The operation of a conventional screen saver is explained below with reference to FIG. 1. When there is no key input from a keyboard of a user's computer for a predetermined period of time, a character line or logo is displayed on the main screen 20 of the monitor 10 of the user's computer according to a screen saver program. There are variety of characters and logos according to screen savers. For example, figures such as straight line, circle, square and oval are displayed regularly or irregularly. FIG. 1 shows a screen saver generating countless straight lines at arbitrary angles. The screen saver has characteristic of fast screen conversion speed.
The figures are displayed as described above to prevent the monitor 10 from being destroyed due to impact of electrons radiated from the high-voltage coil of the monitor 10 on the fluorescent plane thereof even when the monitor is not used for a long period of time. Furthermore, there may be displayed on the monitor not only the figures but also a specific content, for instance, "window character lines" of Microsoft Co., Ltd., or character lines inputted by the user.
According to the present invention, an advertising screen saver 40 including an advertisement is displayed on the main screen 20 of the monitor 10 instead of the conventional screen saver 30. This is shown in FIG. 2. Referring to FIG. 2, the advertising screen saver 40 includes character lines which may be plural lines which are horizontally moving without cease or may be a logo of a specific company. It is obvious to those skilled in the art that the advertising screen saver 40 can be realized in various figures or logos as well as the character lines. The advertising method of the
present invention is explained below with reference to FIG. 3.
When a user finishes a certain work while his/her computer is being turned on, the microprocessor (not shown) serving as the main controller of the computer measures a period of time during which there is no input from the keyboard of the computer according to a screen saver operating program included therein. In a conventional computer, its operating system such as Window 95/98 supports the screen saver program. Thus, it is sufficient that an advertising screen saver producer produces only advertising screen saver program which operates by the operating system without production of additional programs and the advertising screen saver is selected from a screen saver set screen.
In the state set to operate the advertising screen saver, if there is no input from the keyboard of the computer for a predetermined period of time, the advertising screen saver 40 is automatically activated to protect the monitor 10. The advertising screen saver 40 for protecting the monitor 10 being displayed on the monitor 10 may be a phrase advertising a specific company, as shown in FIG. 2. Simultaneously with activation of the advertising screen saver 40, the microprocessor measures the operating time of the advertising screen saver 40. That is, the operating time of the advertising screen saver 40 is considered as a period of time during which the user saw the advertisement and this is measured to be accumulated. The period of time during which the user saw the advertisement displayed on the screen saver is calculated by the week or month, for example.
A program which automatically calculates the period of time during which the user saw the advertisement is designed in such a manner that, in case of connection to the Internet, a program for automatically transmitting the period of time during which
the user saw the advertisement is included in the advertising screen saver program so that the period of time is automatically calculated upon initiation of operation of the screen saver. The total period of time during which the user saw the advertisement, calculated by the week or month, is stored in the user's computer and then it is transmitted to the advertising company or service agency using electronic mail. With reference to the total period of time transmitted, the advertising company or service agency pays a charge, which is proportional to the period of time during which the user saw the advertisement, to the user.
In the advertising method of the present invention, furthermore, in addition to the payment of charge to the user, the advertising screen saver may be distributed as a bundle with a specific software. In this case, useful software is provided to the user free or with a discounted price, which is paid by the advertising rate of the advertisement displayed on the screen saver. At this time, of course, the period of time during which the user saw the advertisement is accumulated by the week or month and then is transmitted to the advertising company or service agency through an electronic mail or access of home page, to allow the advertising company or service agency to be able to confirm the actual period of time during which the user viewed the advertisement. In this case, the user may be not paid the charge for seeing the advertisement. Moreover, useful software including the advertising screen saver is sold with a certain price, and then a period of time during which the user used the screen saver is measured using a time measuring program included in the advertising screen saver program, to return a charge corresponding to this period of time to the user. Furthermore, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is also possible that, when a
home page is opened on the Internet and a user downloads the advertising screen saver 40 from the home page to use it, the user is paid a charge corresponding to a period of time during which he/she used the advertising screen saver. In this case, when the period of time during which the user saw the advertisement is transmitted through an electronic mail or access of screen saver home page, the period of time during which the user used the advertising screen saver is automatically searched and the user is paid a charge corresponding to this period of time, thereby promoting advertisements.
Although the embodiments of the advertising system and method using a screen saver according to the present invention have been explained, the present invention is not limited thereto. The advertisement can be displayed on a start screen, background screen and ending screen though it is displayed on the screen saver in the above-mentioned embodiments. The advertising system and method described above should be partly modified in order to display advertisements on the start screen, background screen and ending screen but explanation for this is omitted because it can be easily realized by those skilled in the art.
While certain embodiments and details have been shown for the purpose of illustrating the present invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
