Abstract

In a wide area network (WAN) configured to act as a local area network (LAN) for enabling clients (e.g. PCs) to access the Internet, a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server makes address resolution protocol (ARP) table or cache entries in response to DHCP messages received from respective clients. The ARP entries include a client's logical interface, IP address, hardware address, and network connection identifier (e.g. virtual circuit (VC) identifier). Accordingly, the DHCP server need not broadcast ARP requests to obtain client addresses and/or may ignore incoming alleged or actual ARP replies, thereby reducing WAN traffic and rendering the network more secure.
