Abstract

The storage capacity of a DVD is already higher than that of a conventional CD by a factor of 20. The invention provides three alternatives for further increasing storage capacity and increasing the reading out speed. All of the inventive solutions are based on the main idea of developing the known optical scanning head into a 'multi-spot DVD pick-up' with which it is possible to produce a number of focusing points exceeding the minimum number, for synchronously scanning a large number of tracks and layers. To this end, the optical scanning head (1) may have a multiplex objective (7) with a superimposed grating structure (8) made up of a number of individual grating structures (J1, J2, J3,...Ji). The optical scanning head may also have additional beam splitters in front of or behind the collimator or a number of simultaneously operated laser diodes of adjacent wavelengths. Combinations are also possible. With the inventive scanning heads, DVDs can be used wherever large quantities of data have to be scanned quickly.
