Abstract

A system (10) for creating customized CD-ROMs of compressed audio data. A computer system (11) includes a database (18) of music that is categroized by a plurality of factors. A user selects which factor they require and the computer system selects songs meeting the criteria selected. The selected songs are compressed (78) and stored as files on a blank CD-ROM (74). A CD-ROM player (76) including a computer and an MPEG decoder plays the compressed audio files. The encoded CD-ROM (22) has instructions encoded thereon that define the order of the songs to be played and the length of time for which a group of songs will be played.
