Description

Method for programming television signal receivers and/or television signal receivers implementing the mentioned method.
DESCRIPTION.
The present invention refers to a method for programming television signal receivers, herein intending television signal receivers as, television sets, video tape recorders and all other appliances able to receive and elaborate television signals.
It is known that every television signal receiver, in particular a normal television set or video tape recorder, has to be programmed upon installation before being able to easily receive the various television programs available.
For instance in the area of Turin (Italy) it is necessary to tune the television to channel 55 (RAI 1) and memorise it with key 1 (program 1), to tune to channel 30 (RAI 2) and memorise it with key 2 (program 2); tune the television to channel 40 (RAI 3) and memorise it with key 3 (program 3); tune the television to channel 45 (RETE 4) and memorise it with key 4 (program 4); tune the television to channel 61 (CANALE 5) and memorise it with key 5 (program 5); and so on for approximately 20 broadcasters.
Only after having carried out this laborious task is the user able to easily use the appliance, selecting the desired program by pressing the dedicated key. Such programming cannot be carried out at the factory, being as that the channel situation differs from area to area; therefore the task is the duty of the retailer or installer.
The purpose of the present invention is that of indicating a method for programming a television signal receivers being faster and easier. A further purpose of the present invention is that of indicating a television signal receiver, with appropriate memory means, able to implement in an optimal manner the aforementioned method. So as to reach such purpose the present invention has as its subject a method for programming a television signal receiver having the characteristics as described in the first claim, and a television signal receiver, which can be connected to appropriate memory means, that implements the aforementioned method. Further purposes and advantages of the present invention shall result in being clear from the following detailed description and annexed drawings, supplied purely as an explanatory and non-limiting example, wherein:
- figure 1 schematically represents the key board of a remote control device apt at enabling the method according to the invention;
- figure 2 schematically represents the circuit of the remote control device illustrated in figure 1; figure 3 schematically represents the circuit inserted in the television signals receiver which implements the invention, according to a variation of the solution.
Figure 1 represents a remote control device indicated with the symbol TC; in the figure ten numeric buttons or keys are visible (from 0 to 9) that have the purpose of composing the identifying numbers of the television channels to be tuned according to the CCIR standard and the numbers of programs (keys) to be associated with them; in this case the television signal receiver shall be of the frequency synthesis type or, if voltage synthesis, with the possibility of carrying out the direct channel paging, as described in the European patent application n° 93116403.2.
In the same figure another 7 command buttons or keys are visible and in particular:
- key P: program mode; - key CH: channel mode key S: sequential selection of the type of channellization (CCIR, CATV, Hyperband, etc.);
- key M: memorisation;
- key I : enter; - key +: positive increase (for instance increasing the value of the frequency tuned by the tuner) ; key -decrease (for instance for decreasing the value of the frequency tuned by the tuner) . In figure 2 the essential blocks of the circuit of the remote control device are visible:
- KB: command key;
- μP: microprocessor (a simple 4 bit microprocessor is sufficient) ;
- EAROM: non volatile memory for memorising tuning data (a small memory of 2K BIT could suffice, or 256 bytes, for 100 programs) ; - TX: transmitter of signals of infra-red rays.
The programming of the remote control device takes place only once and remains valid for tuning all the receivers installed in the same area, this is done as follows : - entering the programming mode of the remote control device TC (for instance simultaneously pressing 3 keys, for protection against accidental manoeuvres; or a small hole could be provided to be enabled by way of the point of a pencil; - pressing the key P and the number of the desired program;
- pressing the key S for selecting the channelliza- tion;
- pressing the key CH and the two numbers of the desired channel; at this point the image appears on the screen relative to the tuned channel;
- a correction of the fine tuning can eventually be carried out, acting on the + and - keys provided on the remote control TC; - pressing the key M;
- the previous operations are repeated for all the desired programs;
- one exits from the programming mode with the same system used for entering; at this point it is possible to verify whether all the keys, accept key I, are inactive;
- key I is pressed for sending the data to the EAROM memory of the remote control to the television; naturally the transmission of the data will start with a command that will prepare the television signals receiver to operate in the mode of programming the memory of the stations to be tuned. So as to facilitate the user it provides, upon pressing the key I, that the wording START appear on the screen and, upon termination of delivery the wording STOP appears. This service requires the microprocessor of the receiver to be programmed in such sense; however, even if the receiver is not programmed in a special way, the operation can normally take place, i.e. the receiver will receive the commands one after the other as if the user had sent them manually. It is clear that the last command that the device sends will be that of exiting the memory programming mode of the stations. Therefore with the remote control device TC, once the first station programming has taken place, associating every position of the memory with programs, a determined channel to tune, with the same remote control device TC it is possible to reprogram as many receivers as desired, it is sufficient to press key I. The remote control device TC shall therefore be a service remote control, given, or in addition to the normal remote control of the receiver, or to the personnel of the technical assistance service or to the installer, for allowing to program the tuning of a plurality of television signal receivers, without having to repeat each time the same sequence of commands, on every appliance. In figure 3, in which the block diagram of a part of the circuit of the television signals receiver is represented according to a variation of the solution implementing in an optimal manner the method according to the invention, the reference number 16 indicates the receiving antenna; number 17 indicates the tuner, which is supposedly of the known type known as "frequency synthesis", and that allows the direct selection, inputting the channel number assigned according to the standard CCIR by a certain broadcaster, the television signal intercepted by the receiving antenna. Reference number 18 indicates, in the same figure, the amplifier of the intermediate frequency signal; number 19 indicates the circuit of the video detector and number 20 a preamplifier of the detected video signal Reference number 26 indicates a circuitry block that generates in a known way the vertical and horizontal synchronism signals starting from the appropriate impulses contained in the preamplified video signal, indicated with the reference number 30. Block 26 also contains a known coincidence circuit, that verifies whether the incoming signal is synchronised with the locally produced deflection signals, in such case generating an appropriate coincidence signal, which reaches a terminal, indicated with C, of the successive circuitry block 27, which is a control circuit, described in more detail later in the text.
The signal proceeds towards the amplifier or the final video amplifiers (not illustrated in the figure) , which apply it to the visualisation system, usually being a CRT. Reference number 200 indicates a remote control signal transmitter, for instance of the usual infra-red rays type; such transmitter contains a plurality of command keys (for simplicity not illustrated in the figure), from among which a key MM can be provided for initiating the memorisation of the receivable signals Reference number 201 indicates the receiver of the remote control signals; it is coupled to the control circuit 27.
To the circuit 27 the vertical VA and horizontal HA synchronism signals, and of coincidence C arrive, coming from the circuit 26, and a frequency signal F, coming from the tuner 17; from the circuit 27 a tuning control signal SS departs which reaches the tuner 17. Reference number 29 indicates a read and write memory, of the non volatile type; such memory is connected to the circuit 27 by way of a bi-directional bus BB and has the purpose of memorising in a known way the tuning information relative to a plurality of receivable television stations.
The control circuit 27 is a logic circuit, for instance a microprocessor, containing or associated to a read only memory R, in which a series of operative instructions and data have been memorised; such data comprises a rule for memorising within the memory 29 the tuning information relative to the programs and to the channels, received by the remote control 200 according to the known way, or by the service remote control TC, illustrated in figures 1 and 2, according to the invention, once the automatic memorisation has been enabled by way of the key I of the remote control device TC . The circuit 27 manages the functioning of the receiver; decodes the commands sent by the user, by way of the remote control 200 or by the installer by way of the remote control device TC; provides for tuning the receivable television signals by way of the antenna 16 and the tuner 17; provides for memorising the tuning information relative to such signals and to recall it, if necessary, for providing to tune once again a signal preferred by the user.
Use of the remote control TC according to the invention, according to figures 1 and 2, together with a television receiver such as that of figure 3, takes place very easily as follows.
After having programmed the remote control device TC as mentioned above, i.e. after having memorised in the device the channel/program combinations for all the receivable broadcasters in the area, it is sufficient to press the key I on the remote control TC. According to this variant of the invention, as opposed to transmitting all the commands that the receiver would expect to receive, once received the command which prepares it to operate in the programming mode of memorising the stations to be tuned, the remote control device TC, would limit itself to transmit a sequence of data pairs, where every pair has data relative to the program selected and data relative to the channel that has to be associated to the mentioned program. In this way the transmission will start, by way of the remote control TC, in sequence of all the memorised combinations; the receiver as it is at the beginning of said sequence will have received the command to enter into the station memorisation mode, provides to memorise in the memory 29 the sequence of combinations received; at the end an appropriate signal will inform the television receiver of the end of transmission, and the receiver will return to the normal mode. In this mode the time necessary for programming the receiver is minimised.
It is clear that in this second embodiment of the invention, the television signals receiver has to be realised in a dedicated manner, in particular so as to be able to function with such type of service remote control, which only transmits data pairs for the memory; i.e. the code transmitted by the remote control and which places the receiver in the station memorisation mode, it will also assure that the microprocessor, which manages the memorisation of the stations, interprets the successive codes as data pairs for the memory and not as commands for continuing the memorisation.
The characteristics of the method for programming television signal receivers described result in being clear from the executed description and annexed drawings. It is clear that two modes exist for carrying out the programming method according to the invention; taking into consideration that the method consists in associating to every program a determined channel, in memorising such data and in then transferring it to the receiver, it is possible:
- if the receiver is not previously arranged, it is necessary to transmit to the receiver the programming commands, as if they came from a normal remote con¬ trol; - if the receiver has been previously arranged for the reception and memorising of the simple sequence of data pairs, it is sufficient to transmit such sequence. From the given description the advantages of the method for programming television signal receivers subject of the present invention are also clear. In particular they consist in the fact that it is necessary to carry out the task of programming only once, after which the effective programming of a receiver of signals that has to work in the same area requires that only a single key be pressed on the remote control device. Such service remote control is found to be particularly advantageous in use with retailers or installers because, upon the sale of the television appliance or its installation, with the previously programmed remote control, in a very short time the receiver which is about to be sold or installed can be programmed. It is clear that the described method for programming television signal receivers is more advantageous than those previously known; it is also clear that numerous variants are possible by the skilled man, to the method and to the means necessary for programming television signal receivers described as an example, without for this departing from the novelty principles inherent in the invention.
From among the possibilities we may cite a different support on which to memorise the tuning data of the receiver which associate to the programs the relative channel number, such as for instance magnetic supports or electronic boards.
Another possible variant may consist in providing a service remote control device which incorporates a circuit able to emit a plurality of different codes. In this way the service remote control is able to operate communicating with different chassis of the same brand name or even of different brands, thus realising a universal remote control. It is clear that, for selecting the different types of codes to utilise for the transmission of commands and data to the receiver, it will be necessary to previously arrange appropriate selection means, comprising switches or choice codes of the transmission data codes.
