Abstract

Coating compositions (105, 109, 113, 205, 305, 405, 503) for blocking heat from hyperthermal sources are reinforced with high-temperature, high emissivity, open weave fabrics (107, 111, 207, 307, 407, 507, 508). The coating compositions contain materials which actively respond to excessively high temperatures by undergoing endothermic processes or by swelling, preferably by both. The preferred fabrics (107, 111, 207, 307, 407 507, 508) are made of graphite or cardo-polymer yarns. The reinforced compositions may be applied directly to a substrate (101, 203, 303), or they may be molded into self-supporting shapes (401), which are applied to the substrate or are themselves structural units.
