Abstract

A public switched telephone network comprises a plurality of digital main switching units each including a gateway mobile switching centre for a public communications network. Also, a digital main switching unit for a public switched telephone network includes a gateway mobile switching centre for a public communications network.

Description

PSTN/PCN SWITCHING ARRANGEMENT
The present invention relates to Public Communications Networks (PCNs). These networks provide a mobile communications service to a user carrying a low-powered handset called a Mobile Station (MS).
According to the present invention there is provided a public switched telephone network comprising a plurality of digital main switching units each including a gateway mobile switching centre for a public communications network.
Each digital main switching unit is connectable to at least one mobile switching centre of a public communications network.
According to the present invention there is further provided a digital main switching unit for a public switched telephone network including a gateway mobile switching centre for a public communications network.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 shows a typical Public Communications Network interfaced to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN);
Figure 2 shows a Public Communication Network interfaced to a Public Switched Telephone Network in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, which shows a known version of a PCN/PSTN system, the PCN comprises a number of Base Station Systems (BSSs) limited to Mobile Switching Centres (MSCs). Each MSC has an associated Visited Location Register (VLR). A VLR contains information about PCN registered users who have been identified as being within the geographical area served by one of the BSS connected to the associated MSC. It is necessary for the user's Mobile Station (MS) to be switched "on" for the identification to take place.
One or more MSCs in a PCN are interfaced to the PSTN via a Gateway Mobile Switching Centre connected to Digital Main Switching Unit (DMSU) otherwise known as a Trunk Exchange. The functionality and interfaces of the GMSC are defined by the European standards body Groupe Speciale Mobile (GSM).
Additionally, each PCN has a Home Location Register (HLR), which contains information about all registered users of the PCN, including their current location if known, obtained from the VLRs. This location information will identify the MSC serving the user's current location.
A PSTN user making a telephone call to a PCN registered user will dial the Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network (MSISDN) number of that user. The call is routed via a Local Exchange (LE) to the DMSU.
From routing tables located in the DMSU it can be determined that the call is destined for a registered user of the PCN. The DMSU interrogates the HLR with a Send Routing Information (SRI) request. The HLR responds with a current Roaming Number (RN) for the called user or an indication that there is no current location information for the user (i.e. the user is not within range of a BSS or that the MS is switched Off).
The RN is used by the interrogating DMSU to determine which GMSC and MSC serve the called user's current location. The call is then routed through the PSTN trunk network to the DMSU and GMSC which serve the called user's MSC.
Consequently, the PSTN operator provides the trunk network for the PCN operator, who avoids the large capital investment to set up its own separate trunk network.
Referring now to Figure 2, according to the present invention, there is shown an arrangement where the functionality of the PSTN DMSU and the PCN GMSC are combined in one physical unit, DMSU/GMSC, within the PSTN network. As a result the two logically separate networks share the same physical infrastructure. The PCN operator does not need to install its own GMSCs, and the functionality is provided by the PSTN operator on selected DMSUs. While the invention has been described with particular reference to certain embodiments, neither the illustrated embodiment nor the terminology employed in describing them is intended to define the invention, which is intended to be limited only by- the scope of the appended claims.
