Description
An embossing machine for embossing cards of the type of identification cards
DESCRIPTION
This invention relates to an embossing machine as set forth in the pre-characteπ'zing part of Claim 1.
As is known, the customization of a card requires that a set of items of information, varying in number and type, be entered thereon to suit the intended destination for the card.
Known are embossing machines wherein the card is moved along two orthogonal directions at the location of a drum which can be displaced angularly by means of a drive. The drum carries a plurality of characters, including alphabetical characters, numerical characters, and such other characters as punctuation marks. Strikers, which may comprise a pair of rocker arms, are arranged to act on the drum for embossing characters as required.
While being advantageous from several aspects and widely used, such prior machines fall short of expectations as to their productivity.
The underlying problem of this invention is to provide a machine of the type specified above, which can overcome the aforesaid drawback.
This problem is solved by an embossing machine according to the characterizing part of Claim 1.
Further features and the advantages of the embossing machine according to this invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given' by way of illustration and not of limitation with reference to the accompanying drawings, where:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embossing machine according to the invention, and
SUBSTITUTE SHEET
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a detail of the machine shown in Figure 1.
With reference to the drawing views, generally shown at 1 is an embossing machine according to the invention for embossing a card 2.
The card 2, e.g. of the type of an identification card, has spaces 3 intended to be embossed with appropriate characters. A more advanced version of such a card would also include a magnetic strip 4 and/or loadable memory 5 adapted to receive data in magnetic analog and/or electronic digital forms for initializing the card.
The machine 1 comprises a load-bearing frame structure 6 and a card travel path 7 extending along a horizontal direction X-X, between a card supply magazine 8, wherein cards to be embossed are loaded in stacked arrangement, and a card collect magazine 9, whereinto the embossed cards are delivered, also in stacked arrangement.
The machine 1 has a first embossing station 10 placed along the path 7, downstream from the supply magazine 8.
The embossing station 10 is of a type which comprises a small frame 11 attached to the frame structure, and a font drum 12 which is displaceable angularly about a vertical axis. The drum 12 is sized to have a relatively small diameter, adequate to accommodate a limited number of characters, i.e. just some of the characters required. It carries, in the example shown, characters 12a commensurate to the letters of the Latin alphabet.
Arranged to be active on the drum 11 is a striker member 13 of the type having opposed rocker arms 14.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET
The machine 1 further comprises a second embossing station 15 placed along the path 7, downstream from the first and upstream of the collect magazine 9, it being secured on the frame structure 6.
The embossing station 15, no further described herein because identical of the station 10, has a drum 16 which is sized to have a relatively small diameter dimension, adequate to accommodate a limited number of characters, that is just the remainder of the characters required. In the example shown, it has characters 16a including the Arabic numerals and punctuation marks.
The machine 1 also comprises first and second pick-up and transport units, both designated 17, which are secured on the frame structure 6.
Each of these units is arranged to lie along the path 7, at the location of a respective embossing station 10, 15 ahead of the latter.
Each unit 17 includes a gripper 18 which is movable along a horizontal direction X-X and a horizontal direction Y-Y perpendicularly to the former, e.g. through a suitable cross slide arrangement, and operative to so hold a card 2 as to bring its space 3 to registry with the drums 12 and 16, respectively.
Indicated at 19 is a transport unit, located along the path 7 between the embossing stations 10 and 15 and operative to move the card 2 along the direction X-X.
In the example shown, the transport unit 19 comprises two power-driven, rubber-lined rollers 20 and 21, which are spaced

apart from each other and co-operate with respective anvil rollers 22 and 23 in grasping the card 2.
An initializing station 24 is supported on the frame structure 6 at a position facing toward the path 7 at the transport unit 19.
Notably, the station 24 has a head 25 located between the roller pair formed of the roller 20 and anvil roller 22, and the roller pair formed of the roller 21 and anvil roller 23, which is active on the card 2 to enter information on the magnetic strip 4 and/or the write memory 5.
The machine 1 is completed by a suitable electrical and electronic arrangement for operating and controlling it as required.
In operation of the machine 1, a continuous stream of cards 2 is caused to flow from the supply magazine 8 to the collect magazine 9, as each card 2 is embossed at the first station 10, initialized at station 24, and embossed at the second station 15, it being caught during these process steps sequentially in the gripper 18 ahead of the first station 10, the nip of the roller pair provided by the roller 20 and its anvil roller 22, the nip of the roller pair provided by the roller 21 and its anvil roller 23, and the gripper 18 ahead of station 15.
On the machine 1, two cards can be embossed simultaneously, respectively with the alphabetical characters and numerical, characters, at the embossing stations 10 and 15, while a third card can have information entered thereon in magnetic and/or electronic forms at the initializing station 24.
The time required to complete the operation of embossing
SUBSTITUTE SHEET
each of the cards is quite short at either embossing stations, 10 and 15, because of the angular displacements of the drums taking place at a high speed by virtue of their small size.
A major advantage of the inventive machine is that it enables cards to be embossed at an uncommonly high rate, on account pf _ its ability to process two cards at a time, and each card at an improved speed.
A further advantage is that the machine lends itself for also effecting the recording of information in the magnetic and/or electronic forms with no extension of its work cycle times.
An additional advantage is that this machine has a simple construction, can be provided in modular form, and where required, have its card travel path extended to accommodate along the extended path additional embossing stations, to provide reserve stations, that is stations carrying drums with special characters, e.g. exotic characters.
It will be understood that the above-described embossing machine may be altered and modified by a skilled person in the art to meet specific contingent demands, without departing in so doing from the invention scope as set forth in the appended claims.
