It does happen, in particular in the case of drug users, that two doses are drawn into the injection syringe, following which one dose is used immediately, and the other one later. It can happen here that this user forgets to remove the injection syringe from the body after the first dose.
- Such overflow channels are provided in order to prevent the second quantity of drug from being injected into the body through the expansion of the expansion agent. It is clear that various variations of the injection syringe according to the present invention are obvious for the expert, such as, for example, an injection syringe without the nose part etc.
Abstract
An injection syringe, at least comprising a piston (2), a liquid holder (1) and a needle (5), where the needle is situated on a needle holder (4) which is displaceable in the liquid holder, and where before use the needle is situated in the liquid holder and can be driven out by displacing the piston, as a result of which the needle holder is clamped, while the needle holder also serves as an auxiliary piston which with the piston bounds a liquid space, according to the invention there is at the other side of the needle holder an expansion agent (8) which becomes active with delayed effect after sliding out of the needle, and is equipped to drive back the needle holder with the needle.
Description
Injection syringe with automatically retractable needle.
The present invention relates to an injection syringe, at least comprising a piston, a liquid holder and a needle, where the needle is situated on a needle holder which is displaceable in the liquid holder, and where before use the needle is situated in the liquid holder and can be driven out by displacing the piston, as a result of which the needle holder is clamped, while the needle holder also serves as an auxiliary piston which with the piston bounds a liquid space. Such an injection syringe is known; in general, after use of the injection syringe the needle with the needle holder can be drawn through an additional action into the liquid holder. Due to the fact that the needle is located in the liquid holder, there is no risk of injury and possible infection arising therefrom after disposal of the injection syringe.
Such needles have a number of disadvantages. The user is in fact required to perform an additional action after use. This can be forgotten, or the injection syringe can be disposed of carelessly. This is mainly the case with non- professional users, and in particular users who are using the injection syringe for administering drugs.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the above-mentioned disadvantages, and to this end it is characterized in that there is at the other side of the needle holder an expansion agent which becomes active with delayed effect after the sliding out of the needle, and is equipped to drive back the needle holder with the needle. In the case of the injection syringe according to the present invention, it is not necessary after use, i.e. after the injection of a liquid, to perform an additional action in order to draw the needle into the liquid holder. This in fact takes place automatically through the presence of an
expansion agent becoming active with delayed effect.
Other features and embodiments of the invention are described in the sub-claims.
A special embodiment of the injection syringe according to the present invention will be explained below by way of example with reference to the appended drawing, in which Figs, la - le show the different steps of use of an injection syringe according to the present invention.
Fig. la shows the injection syringe as it is obtainable. It comprises a liquid holder 1, containing a main piston 2 with piston rod 3. The liquid container 1 also contains a needle holder 4 or auxiliary piston which serves as a needle base for the needle 5. A nose part 6 provided with teeth 7 is pushed onto the needle. These teeth serve to break a holder with an expansion agent 8 at the time of use. Snap grooves 9 and 10 can interact with ribs on the nose part and the needle holder respectively. Snap groove 11 interacts with cams 12 present on the inside of the liquid holder. The whole unit is provided with a closing cap 13. In the figures which follow the same reference numbers indicate the same parts.
Before use, the closing cap 13 is removed first of all, and the main piston 2 is driven in the liquid holder until the ribs present on the nose part 6 and the needle holder 4 snap into the snap grooves. At that moment the situation shown in Figure lb is reached, and the holder of the expansion agent 8 is broken by the teeth 7 present on the nose part 6. This breaking causes the expansion agent to become active with delayed effect, this delay generally amounting to 10 - 12 mins.
The injection syringe is now ready to draw up a quantity of liquid to be injected by placing the needle in the liquid to be drawn up and drawing the main piston 3 partially out of the liquid holder. When sufficient liquid is drawn up, something which can be determined by the snap groove 11 and cams 12 or by scale marks placed on a transparent liquid holder, the situation shown in Figure lc is reached.
The needle is then taken out of the liquid, and the liquid present in the liquid holder is injected into the body.
Should the injection syringe be disposed of carelessly at this moment, after a limited period of time the expansion agent 8 will expand to the position shown in Figure le. During the expansion the needle holder 4 with the needle 5 is driven back into the liquid holder 1. This movement preferably takes place until the end of the needle 5 has moved past the end of the nose part 6. If the axis of the channel in the nose part now deviates slightly from the longitudinal axis of the liquid holder, it will be impossible to drive out the needle again if there is any attempt at re-use. The interior of the needle end of the liquid holder is advantageously tapered, and the nose part is also tapered, both in such a way that during the sliding out of the needle the nose part is deformed around the needle by the tapered end of the liquid holder. After withdrawal of the needle, the opening in the nose part will consequently essentially close, so that an additional safeguard against re-use is produced.
Another possibility for counteracting the re-use of the injection syringe is to use an expansion agent which hardens after expansion.
It will be clear that the teeth 7, which in the drawing are situated on the nose part 6, could also be located on the inside of the liquid holder near the end of the needle. It is also possible for the teeth to be situated on the needle holder^ and the expansion agent to be provided on the nose part or the liquid holder wall. The expansion agent is preferably a two-component agent. It is composed of, for example, water and polvurethane, the polvurethane being provided with a gelatin skin. When the water holder is now broken, it will take the water some time to dissolve the gelatin skin before it reaches the polvurethane, which water causes to foam. The thickness of the gelatin skin can be set as desired, and thus also the length of the delay time. Another example is a mixture of
two substances, one of which produces H' ions, for example sodium bicarbonate, on contact with water, while the other substance, for example citric acid, reacts with these ions, producing gas. The possibilities for the expansion agent given in the figures and the description are only examples. It will be clear that there are further possibilities. For example, the expansion agent can be a gas-forming agent, or possibly a spring held in the tensioned state by a lock, the lock being soluble through a liquid present in a breakable holder.
One or more overflow channels are preferably present at the end of the liquid holder lying opposite the needle end, for the discharge of residual liquid from the liquid space during driving back of the needle. It does happen, in particular in the case of drug users, that two doses are drawn into the injection syringe, following which one dose is used immediately, and the other one later. It can happen here that this user forgets to remove the injection syringe from the body after the first dose. Such overflow channels are provided in order to prevent the second quantity of drug from being injected into the body through the expansion of the expansion agent. It is clear that various variations of the injection syringe according to the present invention are obvious for the expert, such as, for example, an injection syringe without the nose part etc.
Claims
1. Injection syringe, at least comprising a piston, a liquid holder and a needle, where the needle is situated on a needle holder which is displaceable in the liquid holder, and where before use the needle is situated in the liquid holder and can be driven out by displacing the piston, as a result of which the needle holder is clamped, while the needle holder also serves as an auxiliary piston which with the piston bounds a liquid space, characterized in that there is at the other side of the needle holder an expansion agent which becomes active with delayed effect after sliding out of the needle, and is equipped to drive back the needle holder with the needle.
2. Injection syringe according to Claim 1, characterized in that the expansion agent is a multi-component agent, whose components are provided in one or more holders, and on sliding out of the needle are brought into contact with each other with delayed effect through the breaking of at least one holder.
3. Injection syringe according to Claim 2, characterized in that the expansion agent is located on the needle base, and in that teeth are provided on the inside of the liquid holder near the needle end.
4. Injection syringe according to any of Claims 1 - 3, characterized in that the multi-component agent is composed of water and polvurethane.
5. Injection syringe according to any of the preceding Claims 1 - 4, characterized in that the multi-component agent is composed of water, on the one hand, and a mixture of a substance producing ions, and in particular H' ions, with water, on the other, and a substance reacting with these ions and producing gas.
6. Injection syringe according to any of Claims 2 - 5, characterized in that one component is surrounded by a skin which is soluble in the other component and provides the desired delay.
7. Injection syringe according to any of Claims 1 - 6, characterized in that the needle end of the liquid holder has an opening which is slightly larger than the diameter of the needle, and in that a nose part is present which is slidable over the needle and has an opening which is essentially of the same diameter as the needle, the nose part being held fast in the end of the liquid holder after sliding out of the needle.
8. Injection syringe according to Claim 7, characterized in that the direction of the axis of the channel in the nose part deviates slightly from the axis of the liquid holder.
9. Injection syringe according to Claim 8, characterized in that the interior of the needle end of the liquid holder is tapered, and in that the nose part is also tapered, both in such a way that during the sliding out of the needle the' end of the nose part deforms around the needle and after withdrawal of the needle into the liquid holder the opening in the nose part essentially closes.
10. Injection syringe according to Claim 9, characterized in that the teeth are situated on the nose part.
11. Injection syringe according to Claim 10, characterized in that the expansion agent is a spring held in the tensioned position by a lock, the lock being soluble by a liquid present in a breakable holder.
12. Injection syringe according to one or more of Claims 1 - 11, characterized in that one or more overflow channels are provided at the end of the liquid holder lying opposite the needle end, for the discharge of residual liquid from the liquid space during driving back of the needle.
