Abstract

Method for providing a thin and sealed lining in a rock chamber, tunnel or pit, for the storage or transport of gas or liquid, by causing the pressure from gas or liquid to be absorbed, via a force transmitting system consisting of concrete and a defined drainage layer, by the circumjacent rock or earth, simultaneously as the force transmitting drainage layer removes the water pressure from the circumjacent rock or earth volumes.

Description

PRINCIPLE FOR THE STORING OF GAS OR LIQUID
The present invention relates to a system for sealed lining of a rock chamber for the storing of petroleum products or gas, also under very high pressures.
The ceiling, walls and floor of the rock chamber are lined with a sandwich construction which comprises drainage material, 20-30 cm concrete affixed to the wall and a sealing membrane of stainless thin sheet- By using the rock as a pressure absorbing medium, it is possible to store gas under excess pressure at a considerably smaller depth than in unlined rock chambers where the gas pressure is counteracted by the overlying water pressure.
By this method, a natural gas storage having an excess pressure of 80 bars can be located under a rock cover of about 70-80 meters, whereas 800 meters are required if no lining is used.
Since the rock is the pressure absorbing medium, the membrane need only have a sealing function. In this way, the sealing membrane need only be so thin that an automatic welding method, such as seam welding, can be used.
The concrete is required merely to serve as a base for the metal sheet and to withstand the pressure from the drainage layer, see Figs. 1-3. The bolt is secured in a hole in the rock. The drainage layer consists of gravel or equivalent material which serves to transmit, at a certain deformation, the pressure to the rock and, at the same time, has a draining function such that no outer water pressure is built up. To prevent penetration of the concrete around the bolt, the bolt must be able to move towards the rock on application of the gas pressure load, and this is achieved in that the bolt is expandable.
The metal sheet which is stainless thin sheet (the quality is selected with due regard to the composition of the water and the resistance requirements), has a thickness of 0.4 mm. The sheets are welded together by seam welding, which means that the sheet is bent and the seams are welded by automatic resistance welding, a technique which is previously known in other contexts, i.e. for stainless roofs, but is also used for protective sheets in ship's tanks.

Claims

CLAIMSThe claims relate to a system for the storing of liquid or gas, having the following features:
1. The force absorbing medium, the rock, is c h a ¬ r a c t e r i s e d by having such a volume that, on failure, the activated volume counteracts the inner gas pressure in the sealed system.
2. A drainage layer consisting of gravel or equivalent material is disposed between the rock and the concrete and c h a r a c t e r i s e d in that it has a draining function such that no water pressure is exerted on the concrete.
3. The drainage layer is further c h a r c ¬ t e r i s e d in that it also transmits the load to the force absorbing medium, the rock.
4. The base for the thin sheet is c h a r a c ¬ t e r i s e d by a smooth concrete surface, reinforced or plain, depending upon the geometric shape and height of the walls and further load conditions.
5. The concrete is affixed to the rock by expansion bolts in order to counteract cracking. The bolt is c h a r a c t e r i s e d in that it can move towards the rock, on inside loads of gas or liquid, in the same manner as the concrete when subjected to loads, since a certain compression of the drainage layer occurs.
6. The inner boundary surface of the lining is c h a r a c t e r i s e d by a thin sheet, the sheets being welded together by automatic resistance welding. For thinner dimensions, sheet thickness 0.4 mm or thinner, the sheet is bent up and welded to an L-profile by so- called seam welding. The L-profile is in turn welded to strip steel in the concrete surface, see Fig. 2.
