aj b6 i war 3 ses J'OHN KELLY, OF SdN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Toial l whom it may come mi) B'e itknown that L Jonn J. Knnnijfa dag Zen of the United States; residing in the city *and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Valve-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
- operated 'or'tampered with by unauthorized in water and gas applied.
, This invention relates to a valve-guard and 1001 -clamp, and particularly pertains to a lock-clamp for locking stop-cocks and valves on service pipes for water, gas, etc. It is the object of this invention to provide a valve-guard which, is adapted to be placedover a stop-cock or the like in such manner as 'to' prevent the stop-cock being r use on shut-ofl valves usually interposed service, pipes near where the latter are cut in on the mains, or adjacent to the meters emglo ed. v I rther' object is to provide a loclo "clamp of the'above description which is Sl111-- wherever the latter are Eple in construction and which can be manuand which can be readily featured cheap] Another object of this invention isto prb vide a'c'ombi'nation iii-which the shield or clamp and the locking means are combined in substantially one plece, thus dispensing with the use of adlocks commonly used in devices of this ha'racter.
A further objectis to provide a combination-clamp,.shield and padlock in which the claimed, having reference panying drawlngs, 111 whichkey operates to place the locking parts in position .to be unlocked, but which cannot be Opened until the key is removed.
The invention consists of the parts andthe construction and combination of parts as hereinafter .morefully described and to the accom- Figure '1 1sa perspective view of the invention as ap lied. Flg. 2 1s a vertical section showin tie clamp in the locked position.
- F. i 3 1s a sectional view in detail of the .tion. Fi 5 shows the third loc showingthe first stage of the unlocking 0 eration. Fig. 4: is a similar view showing tlie second stage of the unlocking operaand last stage with; the 00k unlocked. Fig. 6 is a view of v the key. employed in unlocking the lock.
In the embodiment of my invention, as
shown inthe drawings, I employ a pair of VALVE-GUARD.

thereon to .bolt.
which may be hingedly connected at their lower ends in any suitable manner, and here shown as detachably hinged by means of a tongue or hook 2 on the leafA engaging witha loop or strap 3 formed on the-leaf B.
The central portions of the leaves A9-B are bowed outwardly and oppositely so a sto for-ma cavity 'or recess 4 between the leaves A -.B to accommodate and house {a :sto cock 5 on the-service pipe 6, as shown in F ig, l.- This recess l is designed approximately to conform to the shape'of the stopcock 5 so that when the leaves A.B are closedftogether over the stop-cock 5, the latter willbe effectively incased or covered by a shield which, when looked as later described, will efl'ectually prevent access to the valve.
The locking means consist of a laterally extending hasp-bolt' or looking lug 7 ri idly mounted on the inner face of one o the leaves or jaws,- as B, which is adapted to ex teiid into a chamber or lock case extension 8 formed on the u per end. of the A, and to be ehgaged therein means, as the spi'ingdete tfi; the detent-9 oft-he bolt 7 and engugeable behind a shoulder 10 prevent the withdrawal of the keyhole 11 is provided, in thecase 8 through which a suitable key, as 12, shown in Fig. 6, is inserted to unlock the lock, The
position of the keyhole with respect to the shoulder 10 and detent 9 is important-because after the key pushes the detent 9 out of the way of the shoulder 10', the latter, in opening the lock, encounters thekey so the device cannot be completely opened until the key is withdrawn, as will be more particularly described. p
The operation is as follows: The key 12 is inserted in the keyhole 11 with the end of the key stem or shank entering a hole 13 on the opposite side of the case 8. As seen in Fig. 3, a quarter turn of the the b11314, of the key, to pressthe spring detent 9 outward from beneath the shoulder 10. This releases the bolt 7 from the detent and allows. the former to be partially withdrawn from the case 8, as shown in Fig. 4.
o posed leaf by suitable Patented June leaf members, or jaws,'or shields A and B key .12 causes At this point the shank of the key 12 lies in the path of the shoulder 10 on the bolt 7 and drawn; also the spring detent cannot get prevents the latter being entirely withshank of the key 12 performs an important 9 under-the shoulder 10 whenthe key is withdrawn, which is the next operation, for in order to release the bolt 7- it s now necessary totum the key 12 back to itso'riginal posltion and withdraw it from thecase Bout of the path. of the as shownin Fig. 5.,whichis accomplished byseparatin the leaves A-l3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the function in 'operating'the lock, as it rovides a stop or detent .to revent the wit drawal of the bolt until theey is removed, and unless one knows the combination or the particular mode of manipulation it is impossible to unlock or remove'theattachment, or disturb the adjustment of the valve,
.Havingxthu's described my invention, what a I claim and desire to secure by LettersfPat-. entiiss- 1. a A vhlve-guard comprising two hinged}? connected clamp members having their mi cesed tovform a valve-inclosi'ng pocket, and
dle portions oppositely expanded and re- 'cessedto form a valve-inclosing pocket, and

I
2. Avalve-guard comprising two hingedly connected clamp members havm' their mid dle portions-oppositely; e'xpan ed. and resaid clamp members having cooperating self-locking means, said last-named means including a laterally extending, shouldered locking lug onone member fitting a recessin. the other member, and a detent in-the recess engageable. with said shoulder one jof'saidmembers having a hole" proiiimate to said shoulder when the members are in closed position through which and across said shoul-- shoulder 10 on the bolt 7 In turning the key 12 back, the detbnt 9 is.- caused to rest a 'ain'st'the'undersideflof'the. shoulder 10 an out of engagement there; with, so that the bolt" 7 may be withdrawn;
a pipe and inclose a valve or operating locking me'ans' on the two mem- .bers, sa1d' last-named means including. a
