To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. CON- Drn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Revetment-lviattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion is an improvement in mattresses for use for revctment purposes, especially in connection with protecting the bottom and sides and the caving banks of rivers, such as the ll'iississippi, and the invention has for an object to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective substitute for the ordinary willow mattresses now commonly used along the Mississippi river.
The present invention seeks to provide a mattress of novel construction and including a filling of eXcelsior impregnated with a cementitious substance which will form a concrete when placed in water and will bind in connection with the eXcelsior filling and form practically a solid mass; and the in-'\ vent-ion consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a sectional view illustrating my invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the mattress on a roller and partially drawn therefrom. Fig. 3 is a detail section showing the mattress as in use. Fig. l is a sectional view showing a somewhat different construction from that illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3.
The ordinary willow mattresses are woven with the warp in the form of a wire cable and t-he mattresses are made up to two hundred feet in width and one thousand feet in length and a mattress of the largest size ordinarily costs in the neighborhood of $25,000 and when ready for use is covered by rock and is sunken thereby into position for use. My mattress is designed to take the place of this cumbersome willow mattress and can be readily builtwithout a plant such as the ordinary weaving barges employed in making the willow mattresses and my mattress when in place will be more durable and effective than the mattresses now commonly employed.
As shown, my mattress comprises a filling A of eXcelsior, covers B on opposite sides thereof and usually of suitable cloth, such, for instance7 as burlap and the eXcelsior is Specification of Letters Patent.

impregnated with a cementitious substance usually in the form of a dry concrete, enough cement being included therein to cause the concrete to set when it is wet and make with the excelsior a solid bed which may be of any desired thickness, varying with the quantity of excelsior and concrete filling employed.
The concrete may be of the proper proportions of goed cement, sand and crushed rock or gravel such. as is ordinarily employed in the making of commercial concrete.
As before suggested the mattress may vary in thickness and it can be sewed or tied like the mattress ordinarily employed on beds.
Then ready for use the mattress is to be rolled into large rolls, the excelsior operating at such time to hold the cementitious matter properly distributed throughout the mass of the mattress and when it is desired to use the mattress, it is to be sunk and unrolled right where it is wanted, the action of the water in which the mattress is sunk, operating to set the concrete mass and produce practically a solid bed independent of any superimposed body of rock or the like, such as is ordinarily required in the use of the usual willow mattress.
In practice the mattress will be made of the proper thickness and the eXcelsior will operate to hold the concrete in place until it is set by the action of water.
ln Fig. t I show a form of mattress in which the covers B are omitted, the mattress including the excelsior, the concrete mixed therewith and means for retaining this eX- celsior and concrete filling, consisting of pins D driven through the mattress body and into the earth. This form of mattress will be found useful as a substitute for rip rap work above low water mar r. In this use of the mattress the eXcelsior will. hold the concrete from ruiming off the bank until the concrete is set after being wetted in any suitable manner.
The invention will be found important in protecting the bottoms of rivers near caving banks which ordinarily are graded with a hydraulic grader after which my mattress may be applied by sinking it and unrolling it where it is wanted. The roll is important as it facilitates the handling of the mattress in and under the surface of the water as well as in transporting it from point to point.
The covers above and below may be of any suitable cloth or other textile material. In
proportioning the excelsicr and dry concrete, my idea is to employ enough excelsior to hold the dry concrete While being handled and enough concrete to insure solidity when wet.
I claim:
l. A reyetment mattress, substantially as herein described, .comprising a lling of eX- celsior impregnated or combined with a cementitious matter adapted to set under the action of Water, cloth covers above and below the same and means connecting the opposite covers at intervals whereby to maintain the filling properly distributed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a revetment mattress, a filling of eX- celsior impregnated or combined with a cementitious substance.

5. A revetment mattress comprising a filling of excelsior impregnated or combined With cementitious matter adapted to set under the influence of Water, and opposite coverings for the eXcelsior.
6. A revetment mattress comprising a filling impregnated or combined with cementitious matter adapted. to set under the influence of Water and means for retaining the filling.
