Description

SURGIOAL SYRINGIE. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 12, 1910.

b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADoLr HEILMANN and BERTI-IOLD TAUSS, subjects of the Kings of Saxony and Hungary, respectively, residing at Leipzig, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Surgical Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgical syringes of the type wherein suction for the purpose of filling the cylinder or equivalent liquid receptacle is dispensed with, the ejecting ap pliance (a longitudinally perforated piston with discharge-nozzle) being thrust into a detachable vial or the like containing the liquid.
The invention consists in an improved construction of the piston, and will now be described with reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the syringe, partly in section, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the cylinder, with a detachable cover shown in section, and with the piston-packing indicated by dotted lines.
The cylinder (6 is a glass vessel of the socalled test-tube type. Into the mouth of this tube a perforated plug 6 is inserted, consisting of sterilized rubber or equivalent material. In the example illustrated this plug is cup-shaped, with the hole 6 in its base. The perforation is made prior to placing the plug in the tube, to avoid risk of forcing detached particles of the plug material into the liquid during the boring operation. The piston comprises a collar f formed on an axially perforated rod 9, and a conical, externally screw-threaded boss (Z adapted to be screwed into the hole in the plug, the parts being so proportioned that when the boss has been screwed in, the collar f abuts against the rim surface of the plug. The conical boss slightly expands the plug and causes the same to make a tight joint with the walls of the tube, so that when the piston is thrust into the tube the liquid is expelled solely through the axial bore of the piston-rod, to the nozzle is fitted to this rod.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 12, 1910.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Serial No. 548,839.
The piston-rod has a detachable handle 2', consisting of a curved, perforated plate which can he slipped on to the rod until it abuts against a collar h.
hen the contents of one tube have been discharged the piston is withdrawn, and the plug 6 removed from the boss cl, and the latter may then be screwed into a similar plug in the mouth of a filled tube held in readiness.
Prior to use the filled tube may be closed, as shown in Fig. 2, by a disk it placed over the plug, and a cap m placed over the mouth of the tube.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the cylinder at is detachable from the axially perforated piston rod whereby when the cylinder has been emptied of its contents by operation of the syringe, the rod g may be unscrewed with respect to the plug Z) in the manner above described, and for use in connection with another cylinder or tube a.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a surgical syringe, the combination of a cylinder provided with an open end, a cup shaped plug fitted tightly in the open end portion of the cylinder and formed at its bottom portion with a central aperture, an axially perforated piston rod provided at one end with a threaded boss of less diameter than the hollow portion of the plug and adapted to be screwed into the aperture of the plug, and formed with a collar adjacent to said boss to engage the outer end of the plug and cooperate with the threaded boss to expand the plug when the parts are screwed together, and a, handle carried by the piston rod for forcing the same toward the closed end of the cylinder.
In witness whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
