Description

C. HANSEN.
NAIL.
APPLICATION I'ILIED $116.31, 1909.

INVENTOH U/zm'sfz'an Hansen ATTORNEYS i onrrnn s'r 'rns PATENT onnicn.
CHRISTIAN HANSEN, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
NAIL.
Application filed August Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Nail, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to nails, and more particularly to a nail having a head provided with a spike which is left projecting after the nail has been driven, the head of the nail being provided with a guard having a frangible connection therewith, so that the nail can be driven without injuring the spike carried by the head, and so that the guard can be broken after the nail has been driven.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable nail having a head provided with a pointed spike, which can be driven in the usual manner without injuring the spike, which can be used on fences and the like where it is desirable to provide protective spikes, or for other purposes of this kind, and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a number of nails constituting one embodiment of my invention, driven through a board or the like; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the nails; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of the device; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation shofving a still further modified form of the nai Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that I can employ difierent forms of the nail without departing from the underlying spirit of my invention, which consists in the provision of a nail having a spike at the head thereof, and a frangible guard protecting the same while the nail is being driven. The spike serves the usual purpose, to render diflicult the scaling of fences or walls, to prevent persons from seating themselves upon certain parts of a building or the like, and if so desired can be replaced by a projection, so that the nail can be used as a hook for hanging obj ects upon a Wall. It will thus be seen that the spike may be of different forms.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in the types of the nail shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the body thereof is flat and is stamped or otherwise fashioned from sheet metal. It comprises a shank 10 having one end 11 of wedge or pointed shape so that the nail can be easily driven. The head 12 of the nail is laterally extended and has integral therewith a pointed or sharpened projection 13 which may be of any suitable form. A guard 14 extends over the spike 13 and is preferably of horseshoe form, being connected with the head at its ends. The connections 15 are of reduced thickness so that the guard can be easily broken by means of a blow of a hammer against the side thereof, or by the use of pliers or any other suitable instrument. It will be seen that the nail can be easily driven by blows of a hammer on the guard, and that the spike 13 is thereby in no way injured.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 3 I provide a nail having a round shank 16 with the usual point 17 and a correspondingly rounded head 18. The latter carries a spike 19 and has a guard 20, the connections 21 between the guard and the head being frangible as in the first case.
In Fig. 4 is shown 22, anda head 23 which has a V-shaped cutaway portion so that two spikes 24 are formed. The latter, at their upper ends are connected by a rounded guard 25 having frangible connections 26 with the spike 24 at the ends thereof, so that when the guard is broken away the points are left free.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A nail having a head provided with a part projecting therefrom, and a guard extending over and covering said part, and detachably associated with said head.
2. A nail having a head provided with a pointed projection, and a guard covering said pointed projection, said guard having a frangible connection with said head.
3. A nail, comprising a shank, a head, a spike rigid with said head, and a guard for said spike, said guard having a frangible connection .with said head.
4. A nail, comprising a shank, a head, a

said head is frangible. EDGAR SCHRAMM, In testimony whereof I have signed my GEO; W. DIETZ.
