CHARLES S. COWIE, OF CULPEPER, VIRGINIA.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Application led January 5, 1910. Serial No. 536,515.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES citizen of the United States, a resident of Culpeper, in the county of Culpeper and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Instruments, of whichthe following is a speciication.
This invention relates to a surgical instrument for the treatment and cure of inflammation of the rectum, prostate glands, hemorrhoids or piles, suppression of urine and numerous other troubles of the rectum and bladder.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide a unique and simple instrument' for the treatment of the above specified diseases, and to so construct the same that it can be easily used by the patient without the aid of a physician.
S. Cowin, a
lVith these objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts, and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l, is a side elevation. Fig. 2, is an end elevation, and Fig. 3, is a sectional view.
Referring by numerals to t-he drawings, l represents a receptacle which is so shaped as to substantially conform to that portion of the human body known as the crotch, morev particularly to that portion immediately surrounding the rectum. This receptacle is provided with a screw cap 2, to provide means whereby the receptacle may be filled with crushed ice, or any other freezing, cooling, or heating substance. Threaded into the top of the receptacle is a hollow nipple 3, which has direct communication with the interior of said receptacle, and is adapted to receive a portion of the cooling or heating substance placed in said receptacle. The nipple 3, is somewhat enlarged at its central portion and is provided with a series of elongated depressions 4, adapted to more conveniently hold and retain a quantity of ointment or salve.
The nipple is made detachable from the receptacle in order that various sizes and shapes may be employed, according to the size of the patient to be treated.
In use the receptacle is first filled with the cooling or heating substance, an ointment is then applied to the nipple; and its object is to provide a simple device which may be readily applied.
I deem the foregoing explanation suiliciently plain that the invention will be readily understood by all conversant in such matters, the extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- l. In an instrument for treating rectal diseases, a receptacle conforming in shape to the perneum, having an opening for the introduction of a thermal medium, an opening in the top, a hollow nipple registering with the opening in the top of the receptacle, and means for closing the receptacle.
2. In an instrument for treating rectal diseases, a receptacle conforming in shape to the perineum, having an opening in the bottom for the introduction of a thermal medium, an opposite opening in the top, and a hollow nipple detachably secured in the opening in the top of the receptacle, forming a hollow closed receptacle adapted to be inserted into the rectum.
3. In a surgical instrument of the character described, a receptacle made to conform to the perineum; a detachable hollow elongated nipple opening into said receptacle, said nipple being larger at its central portion than at its end or base, elongated channels or depressions in the central portion of said nipple, and means for permitting the filling of said receptacle and nipple, substantially as shown and for the purpose speciec.
