JOI-IN B. GOODWIN, 0F AMBRIDGE, PENNSYLVANIA.-
SHEET-METAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. GOODWIN, of Ambridge, in the county of Beaver, State Of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Metal Building Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to metallic building construction, more particularly to surface construction of flooring.
The invention is particularly adapted to the production of floor, shutter and stair construction.
I shall now describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may understand and construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference numbers indicate like parts throughout different views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the sheet metal plating; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing my invention as applied to the construction of a stair-tread.
In describing my invention, the reference numeral 2 indicates a series of thin metallic plates, provided with the openings 3.
The numerals 4 indicate spacing members formed preferably integral with the plating. These spacing members are shown in the drawing as so formed, consisting of the continuous projecting wall 5 surrounding the opening 3.
The plates -2 are adapted to be placed together in the manner shown in Figs. l, 4, and 5, the openings 3 registering and the projecting walls 5 contacting with one another. With the plates placed together in this manner, the openings 3 are adapted to receive a suitable soft filler 6, which is adapted to not only bind the plates together, but also by reason of the head Jformation 7 presents Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 14, 1909.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Serial No. 512,923.
an anti-slipping surface, which is an important feature in floor, shutter and stairtread construction. This filler may be of any suitable composition. I find lead to be an admirable material for this purpose. It not only is easy of application and serves to effectually bind the plates together, but it may also be readily removed should it become necessary to replace worn plating. The distance of separation of the plating 2 is dependent upon the degree of projection given the spacing members 5.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art. The projecting walls 5 while serving as spacing means for the plates 2 also reinforce the construction, while the filler 6 not only serves as a connecting means for the plates but also provides an anti-slipping surface.
It will be apparent that changes may be made without departing from my invention.
`Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
l. The combination of a plurality of plates, openings formed therein, and means for binding the plates together, consisting of a soft filler adapted to occupy the openings.
2. The combination of a plurality of plates, openings formed therein, means for spacing the plates one from the other, and a filler occupying the openings and adapted to connect the plates together.
3. The combination of a plurality of plates, openings formed therein, means for spacing the plates one apart from the other, and comprising a boss surrounding the openings, and means for connecting the plates together, comprising a soft filler adapted to occupy the opening and provided with projecting head portions adapted to form an anti-slipping surface.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN B. GOODWIN. Witnesses:
