Wll'jf- V CHARLES T. COLL, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
Application filed August 28, 1909. Serial No. 515,653.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. COLL, a citizen of the Unit-ed States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Jar-Closures, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a receptacle closure, and the invention has for its obj ect to provide any receptacle with simple and effective means for retaining a lid or cover upon the receptacle, said means establishing` a non-leakable and air-tight connection between the receptacle body and lid, whereby fruit and other matter can be safely preserved within the receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to obviate the necessity of using screw threads,
clamps and other devices for firmly fastening a lid upon a jar orany receptacle.
These and such other objects as may hereinal'ter appear are attained by a receptacle closure that will be presently described in detail and then claimed.
Referring now to the drawing forming a part of this specification Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a jar constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a. plan of the jar with the lid thereof removed, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the jar, and, Fig. 4- is a bottom plan of the lid or cover of the ar.
ln the drawings l denot-es a jar or receptacle having a. reduced mouth or neck 2, the inner side of the neck 2 being in a plane parallel. with the sides of the receptacle l, while the outer side of the neck is disposed at an angle, to facilitate the fitting of a lid or cover upon the neck. The outer side of the neck 2 adjacent to the upper edges thereof is provided with equally spaced lugs or protuberances 3, oblong in elevation with the under sides thereof beveled or inclined, as at 4. Four lugs are preferably used and are disposed opposite one another to provide means for tightly retaining a lid or cover upon the jar or receptacle.
5 denotes a lid or cover provided with a depending annular liange which is offset with respect to the body of the lid and has its periphery thereof ribbed, corrugated or roughened, as at 6 to afford a hand grip when removing or replacing the lid or cover. The latter has its inner face 7 provided with an annular groove l1 positioned in a plane removed from the plane in which the inner face of the flange extends. The neck 2 of the jar is adapted to extend in the groove 1l and when the jar is in such position the lower edge of the flange of the cap is adapted to rest upon the annular shoulder or breast 8 of the or receptacle whereby the neck is inclosed by the lid or cover. The diameter of the flange of the lid or cover is the same as the diameter of the body of the jar or receptacle so that the periphery of the flange will be flushed with the periphery of the body portion of the as clearly shown in Fig. l. The walls of the groove 11 are inclined so as to conform to the inclination of the outer side of the neck 2 and the inner face of the flange of the lid or cover is provided with equally spaced inwardly projecting lugs or protuberances 9, said lugs providing spaces 10 to receive the lugs 4, thus permitting the lid or cover being partially rotated or shifted to cause the lugs 9 to ride under and into engagement with the lugs 1. In order that this can be easily accomplished, the upper faces or edges of the lugs 9 are beveled or inclined to correspond to the lower beveled edges 4 of the lugs 3.
Interposed between the upper portionof the outer side of the neck 2 and the inner face of the flange of the lid or cover 5 is a cap or gasket l2, preferably made of waterproof paper. The paper cap is adapted to provide an air-tight connection between the jar or receptacle l and the lid or cover thereof.
The jar or receptacle can be made similar to pottery ware or of a vitreous material, and of various sizes and shapes.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. The combination of a receptacle having a neck of smaller diameter than the body thereof provided at the upper portion of the body with an annular shoulder, spaced lugs integral with the periphery of the neck adjacent the upper edge thereof, a lid provided with a depending flange of a length to engage said shoulder, said flange of less height than the height of the neck, said lid further having its inner face formed with an annular groove extending in a plane inwardly of the plane in which the inner face of the flange extends, said groove adapted to receive the upper edge of said vneck and said flange adapted to inclose *Y neck when the upper end of the neck eX- tends in said groove, and inwardly project.- ing lugs carried by the flange'and adapted to engage under the lugs carried by the neck whereby the lid is coupled to the neck with the lugs engaging the inner face ofthe lid.
2. The combination of a-receptacle having a neck of smaller diameter than the body thereof pro-vided at theV upper portion of the body withV an annular shoulder, spaced lugs integral with the periphery of the neck adjacent the upper edge thereof, a lid provided with a depending flange-of a length to engage said shoulder, said flange of less height than the height of the neck, said lid further having its inner face formedV with an annular groove extending in a plane inwardly of the plane in which the inner vface l the /llange extends, said groove CHARLES fr. coLL.
