UNITED STATES PATEN OF TCE.
RUDOLPH C. KUHN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
VRITING-TABLET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH C. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Writing-Tablet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide an order book having a cover wherein is provided a pocket to contain envelops adapted for mailing the order sheet-s from which the said book is constructed; and to provide a form of construction which is durable, simple and economical.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of an order book constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, the cover or flap being closed upon the leaves of the book; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the flap taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
The body of the book is constructed from a number of leaves 4, which are suitably imprinted, padded, or sewed, and bound. The printed leaves are interleaved, as is usual in order books, to receive impressions from an interposed impression sheet with which the book is provided.
The book is confined between a cover 5 and a flap 6. The cover 5 is preferably formed from or reinforced by a stiif material to form a backing for the leaves 4 while being written upon. The flap 6 may be constructed from a similar material, but I prefer a more flexible material, which is suitably secured to the cover 5.
Formed from the interlining of the flap 6, or attached thereto, is a collapsible and extensible pocket 7. In the form shown in the drawings this pocket 7 is constructed from a flexible material, the edges 1O, 10 of the pocket being indented in the manner of forming the sections of an accordion. The folded edges or sides 10, 10 of the pocket are not connected at the corners of the said pocket, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The pocket 7 is securely fastened to the flap 6 by glue, or other suitable means. In attaching the pocket to the flap,

care is taken to dispose the mouth or opening of the pocket so that when the flap is closed upon the body of the book the open end is turned toward the hinge of the fia of the book. a pocket wherefrom the contents may not be easily dislodged or lost. The pocket, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is made sufliciently large to contain a prearranged number of envelops for transportation.
The flap 6 is provided with a short section 8 extended from the hinged portion 9 of the said flap, in such manner that when the flap is folded in closed position upon the leaves, it presents a vertical section in near proximity to the ends of the envelope contained in the said pocket, and oifers an abutment to prevent the same from leaving the said pocket, or for the same to rest upon when the book is inverted in the position in which it is carried by the salesman or used and handled in an office. hen the flap 6 is thrown back to the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, or farther extended from the body of the book, the envelops carried by the said pocket may be readily and easily extracted therefrom.
The materials forming either the leaves of the book, or cover and flap, or pocket thereof, may be of any desired texture or quality. In general use the books thus construct-ed are for free distribution, and the flap G and pocket 7 are constructed from some desired form of paper.
The operation of a book thus constructed is obvious: Having placed the impression sheet between the leaves at of the order book, the salesman, or person using the book, writes upon the uppermost sheet the order, and when filled folds the same and tears it from the body of the book. He then extracts one of the envelops, which are preferably provided with a printed address and imprinted postage stamp. Inclosing the order within the envelop, and dropping the same in the mail, completes the transaction.
By the use of a book constructed and arranged as herein described and shown, a great deal of time, care and worry are saved to the salesman, or person using the book.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A writing tablet comprising a writing pad formed from paper leaves and provided In this manner there is forme with a stiff back-piece; a cover for said pad suitably attached to the said back-piece and a pocket attached to the said cover and open ing toward the hinge thereof, said pocket having three equally extensible accordionfolded side-sections.
2. A writing tablet comprising a writing pad; a cover formed from paper leaves adapted to infold said pad; and a pocket attached to the said cover and opening toward the hinge thereof, said pocket having three equally extensible accordion-folded side-sections, said sections being disconnected at the corners of said pocket.
3. A writing tablet comprising a writing pad; a cover infolding said pad and suitably connected thereto, said cover having a front piece molded to form an outwardly extended portion adjacent to the hinge thereof; and a pocket attached to said cover and opening toward the hinge thereof, and toward the said outwardly extended portion, and so arranged that the said outwardly extended portion closes said pocket when the cover is folded in closed position.
4. A writing tablet comprising a writing pad composed of leaves of paper; a cover infolding said pad and suitably attached thereto, said cover being molded to form an outwardly extended portion adjacent to the hinge thereof; and a pocket attached to said cover, and opening toward and adjacent to said outwardly extended portion, said pocket embodying three equally extensible accordion folded side sections, said sections being disconnected at the corners of said pocket.
5. A writing tablet comprising a writing pad formed of leaves of paper; a double cover for said pad infolding the same and suitably attached thereto, one of said covers being molded to form two vertically extended portions, one of said portions being adjacent to the hinge of said cover and one adjacent to the opposite end thereof; and a pocket attached to said cover between said vertically-extended portions, said pocket embodying three equally extensible accordion-folded side-sections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
