VNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELISE R. NORWOOD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FOLDING oANoPY FOR HAivnvrocKs.v
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIsE R. NoRwooD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foldable Canopies for Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe object of this invention is to provide a screen or protection from iies and insects in the form of a canopy having means for attaching it to the hammock and having the quality of being collapsible so that it is readily folded up with the hammock when not in use. These and other ends and objects I secure in and by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing illust-rating a canopy and hammock embodying my invention.
The canopy attachment of my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective v iew of a canopy attachment of my invention in position on the hammock. Fig. 2 is a side-elevation. Fig. 3 is a top-view, showing the canopy broken away in part, and the bottom partly detached from the hammock at one side. Fig. 4c represents the canopy detached from the hammock and folded for packing.
Mosquito netting or similar' open mesh fabric is used for the body of the canopy. A strip of the required dimensions, and somewhat wider at one end than at the other, being stretched over three bows l, 2, 3 of approximately semi-circular shape placed one at the head, another at the foot and at least one in the middle, is carried over the end bows and fastened permanently to all. At the bottom edges of the covering a are provided fastening devices 4 5 at intervals apart along the sides, by means of which the netting is fastened to a bottom of pliable fabric b, such as duck or light weight canvas having about the same dimensions in length and breadth as the hammock c with which the canopy is to be used, and similar fastenings 67 on this canvas bottom are pro- Specificaton of Letters Patent.

vided along the sides whereby it can be secured in place.
The openings between the bottom edges of the netting at the head and the foot and the canvas bottom b are either closed by stitching the covering to the canvas, or separate fastenings such as buttons and other like metal fastenings are secured to a strip of fabric, such as tape, along the edge of the material, so as to furnish a strong fastening and insure fly-proof openings between the edges of the canopy and the body of the hammock. These fastenings 4 5 and 6-7 are properly spaced to insure close joints for that purpose along the edges of the canopy.
In the present construction the two sides and the ends of the canopy are permanently united to the bottom, with the exception of a portion along one side and at the head where the canopy is detachably fastened down, so that it can be loosened and an opening afforded for entering under it. The bows that form the frame-work vary in size one over another, the largest being situated at the head and the others varying in size, so as to readily nest or close one within the other when the canopy is folded.
I claim l. The herein described canopy for a hammock comprising the frame of bows, one at each end and the intermediate bows, the bottom of pliable fabric, means for attaching the said bottom to a hammock, a covering of reticulated fabric secured to the bows and extending over the ends of the frame and fastening devices along the sides uniting the covering to the bottom.
2. In combination with a hammock, a supporting canopy frame composed of a bow at each end, and an intermediate bow secured at the ends to the hammock body, a covering of reticulated fabric stretched over the bows and secured at the sides andat the ends to the hammock body, one of said sides being provided with detachable fastenings whereby the canopy maybe opened to admit a person inside.
