C. A. \FOSBURGH, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MERRIMAN, BYRD & (10., OF SAME PLACE.
' Letters Patent No. 95,171, dated! September 21, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To ulfwhom it may concern.- -'Be it known that I, 0. A. 'VosBURGiT-I, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Jitufiiing andGathering- Attachment to Sewing-Machines, of which the f0ll0wing isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, giving a perspective plan of same, and made a part specification.
' The object'ot' my invention is to provide an attachment to an ordinary sewing-machine, by means of which it may be possible, at one and the same operation, to stitch together two pieces of cloth, so that while one is gathered or ruflied, the other shall remain straight.
A square metal plate, E, is made with a thinner- :n-iu, A, having an arm, H, at right angles to it, A and H being of thin elastic spring-metal.
Over A is an elastic arm, B, springing from the shoulder p, on the base E, and having an arm, a, at right angles to it, and over and parallel with H, but not quite as long.
' l'n'ongh Bis passed a thumb-screw, O, by means niay be pressed down'to A.-
A guide-plate, 1 such as is ordinarilyused, is made with an arm, 0, which, fitting over and clasping A and B, will keep its guiding-edge at right angles to A and B. 1
A set-screw passing through the slot in D and the opening in E, fastens the whole to the-bed-plate of the sewing-machine.
The apparatus, being in position, the cloth to be gathered is passed under H, while the piece to remain straight is placed above H, and under a. The arm H is made to cover about two-thirds (a) of the feed, so that whilethe under or unified cloth is acted upon by the feed during its entire play, the upper one is effected by its motion only about one-third as much. By' means of the thumb-screw C, the tension of the presser on the upper'cloth may be regulated at pleas: we. The plates A and B, being thin and elastic, do
not interfere with the action of the feed, as they easily rise and fall with its movements. The guide D, regulating the width of the seam, will, by reason of its arm 0, grasping the plates A and B, always present its guiding-edge parallel to the arm H, and so insure a straight seam.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A ruffling and gathering-attachment for sewingmachines, composed of the plates A and B, with arms a andH, and the slotted guide-plateD, with its clasping-arm 0, all arranged for joint operation, and constructed substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified;
