Be it known that I, CHARLES F. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Clintonville, in the county of Waupaca and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has for its Object to provide a new and improved handle for trunks, valises, telescopes, etc., and is especially adapted for traveling inens heavy trunks.

It has heretofore been common to make handles for trunks of heavy leather straps, which are liable to become broken in the rough handling to which the trunks are usually subjected thus necessitating the same to be made of the best quality of leather thus increasing the cost and making the same ex pensive.

The object of my invention is to form a handle which can be made of most any kind of cheap material and can be made at much less cost than when made of high priced leather, while at the same time the strength and utility of the handle is increased.

Vith these objects in view the invention consists of the details of construction and arrangement which will more fully appear hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1, is an elevation of a trunk handle with parts broken away showing the construction. Fig. 2, is a cross section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, represents the metal cable.

Like numerals and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

' My improved handle is advantageously made of leather in three layers sewed together, the front and rear strips, 1 and 2, respectively, being identical in construction and each being provided with slots a, a, through which pass nails, rivets, or bolts or similar devices in the present instance bolts, as shown at 3. The central or middle layer 4, consists of leather or similar material of the proper size and shape, 2". e. of the same shape and size of the front and rear layers, 1 and 2, with the difference of having one long longitudinal slot 5, within which is inserted an endless metal cable 6, through which pass the bolts 3 and which gives the desired strength to the handles.

To protect each end of the handle and to prevent the screw-head of bolt 3 from wearing through the openings or slots a, a, I apply a guard G of metal which covers practically the projecting portions of the handle and the ends of the guards pass around to the sides of the handle and clip the same and so as to form an opening through which the end portion of the handle slides freely so that the handle may lie flat against the trunk or be bowed out to facilitate the grasping and handling of the trunk handle.

The handle is connected to the trunk, in the present instance, by means of the bolts 3, having nuts 7 on inside of trunk.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a trunk-handle of the class described, the combination of three or more layers, provided with slots, the slots in outer layers being at ends thereof and in alinement with each other, and slot in middle layer extending approximately the length of the layer for the reception of endless wire cable, endless wire cable situated within said slot and bolts passing through said slots and attaching to trunk, substantially as set forth and described.
