Be it known that 1, CHARLES MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Upright- Piano Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to -the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end elevational View, partly in section, of a piano case constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of said piano case.

This invention relates to pianos, and particularly to the construction of upright piano cases of that type in which the portion which carries the key-board can be removed or detached from the main portion of the case so as to enable the piano to pass through a narrow doorway or opening of less width than the depth of the complete piano case.

The main object of my invention is to provide a piano case in which the main portion and the key-board carrying portion are locked together in a novel manner.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates the main portion of the case of the piano in which the action and other parts are arranged, and B designates that portion of the case which carries the keyboard 1, the portion B of the case being permanently connected to the legs or pedestals C, and each pair of legs having their lower ends fastened to a base piece 2. The portion 13 of the case, the legs 0 and the base pieces 2 which the legs are connected to, are all permanently connected together so as to produce a single structure or unit that can be separated from the main portion A of the case and thus enable the piano to be taken through a doorway or opening that is no wider than the depth of the main portion A of the case. Any suitable means can be provided for detachably connecting the unit composed of the legs G, the base pieces 2 and key-boardcarrying portion B to the main portion A of the'case but I prefer to connect said parts together in the manner herein shown.

The portion B is provided with the usual side pieces 3 located adjacent the ends of the key-board, and said side pieces 3 and also the base pieces 2 are provided with devices t and 5, respectively, that project into openings 6 formed in the main portion A of the case, the portion A of the case being provided with plates 7 that cooperate with shoulders P and 5 on the devices 4 and 5, respectively, to retain the key-board-carrying portion B of the case and the legs 0 in operative position. The plates 7 are provided with elongated slots through which the devices 4 and 5 are inserted and the removable portion of the case is then moved downwardly so that the shoulders on said devices will lie behind the plates 7 and thus prevent the removable portion of the case from moving outwardly or away from the main portion A of the case.

Means are provided for locking the removable portion of the case in operative position, and in the construction herein shown said means consists of long rods 8 arranged in vertically disposed openings in the por tion A of the case and having their lower ends contacting with the devices l, as shown in Fig. l, so as to prevent the removable portion from being raised or moved upwardly to disengage the shoulders on the devices 4: and 5 from the plates 7. Each of said rods 8 passes through a stationary nut 9 so that said rod will move vertically when it is rotated, and the upper end of each rod is provided with a head 10 having a slot for receiving a screw driver, or other suitable tool, to turn the rod.

To arrange the removable portion of the case in operative position I first depress the soft pedal of the piano to raise the action slightly and then move the removable por tion from the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 into contact with the main portion A of the case, the devices 4: and 5 of the removable portion projecting through the slots in the plates 7 into the openings 6 in the main portion A of the case. The rods '8 are then screwed down into engagement with the devices i, thus securely locking the removable portion of the case to the portion A, and when it is desired to detach the removable portion the rods 8 are withdrawn from engagement with the devices 4 so that the removable portion can be raised enough to disengage the shoulders on the devices 4 and 5 from the plates 7 and then be moved outwarlly or away from the main portion A of the case.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A piano case comprising a main portion in which the action and other parts are arranged, a detachable portion which carries the key-board, devices on one of said portions having heads that project into openings in the other portion of the case and cooperate with shoulders thereon to retain the detachable portion of the case in operative position, and vertically adjustable rods adapted to be moved into engagement with said devices to prevent them from being disengaged from said shoulders; substantially as described.

2. A piano case comprising a main portion in which the action and other parts are eaoaaeo arranged, a detachable portion consisting of a key-board support, legs, base pieces tastened to the lower ends of said legs, and side pieces arranged adjacent the ends of the key-board support, devices on said side pieces and base pieces having heads that project into openings in the main portion of the case, plates extending over said opening and provided with elongated slots through which the heads on said devices pass, and vertically adjustable rods in the main portion of the case that engage said heads and thus hold them in engagement with said plates; substantially as described.
