Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed October 9, 1908. Serial No. 456,317.
This invention relates to boxes for sprin-f kling pulverized material, and has especial reference to the use of toilet powder, in which the upper end of the box is provided with a closure consisting of a fixed member having discharge perforations or openings, and a member having discharge perforations or openings movable over said fixed member to cause the perforations of said members to register with each other, or to close them.
The invention has for its object to provide a box, of this character by means of which powder may not only be discharged in streams therefrom when it is desired to use it for sprinkling, but also may be use'd to pour out the powder in a single stream instead of in several streams. I
The invention consists in an improved box for discharging pulverized material, so constructed and arranged that it may be used either to sprinkle the :powder, or to pour it out in a single mass, as hereinafterset forth and claimed.
In carrying out thiet invention, a box or receptacle of suitable sine and shape is provided having its upper end provided with a closure consisting oftwo members, one of which is stationary, and the other movable over the fixed member, each member having a number of small openings or holes in, alinement with each other to permit of the dis charge of the material in the box, when tilted, in streams, and each member having an enlarged opening in-alinement with each 0t er to permit of the discharge of a mass. of the material in a single stream when the box is tilted, while the small openings are closed.
The movable member may be so operated as to open the small openings and close the large opening, or close the small openings, and open the large opening, as it is desired to use the box to sprinkle the material, or pour it out in mass in a single stream.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the manner of carrying out the invention,Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper end of a box constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the openings in position for discharging the ment with the holes 6.
contents thereof in a number 01": streams and sprinkling the same. Fig. 2 is a view of the box in elevation with its upper end. portion in vertical section on the line aa-a: of Fig. 1. Fig. ,3 is a plan view of the upper end of the box showing the parts in position for discharging the material in a'single stream only. Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section of the upper portion of the box on; the line yy otF ig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the top of the box showing all the openings closed. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the upper portion of the box on the line 2-2 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is adetail view in perspective of themovable member detached.
1 indicates a receptacle of suitable shape, size and, material, and provided with a e10- sure at its top, preferably consisting of a flanged cover 2 fitting over the upper open end of'the box, and a thin plate 3 in the fornaro'f a disk pivotally secured to rotate on the under side of the cover 2 by means of the centralpivot pin 4. The cover 2 is provided with a number of small holes.5, and
theplate 3 with a number of correspondingly shaped small holes 6 arranged to be moved into alinement with the holes 5. The
cover 2 is also provided with an enlarged opening or hole 7 of any size or shape desired, and the plate 3 is provided with a corresponding opening 8, which is adapted to reglster with the opening 7 when theholes 5 are closed by the plate 3, and whichis closed by the cover 2, when the holes 5 are in aline- Any. suitable means may be employed for operating the plate 3, and as here shown, a button 9 is provided, mounted on the upper end of a pin 10, projecting through a curved 1 the holes 5 and- 6m the cover 2 and plate ,3 are shown in alinement, and the opening in cover 2 closed. With this arrangement of the openings, the box may be used to discharge the powder therein in a number of streams, for sprinkling purposes. ,InFig. 3 the holes 5 are shown as closed by the plate 3, and the holes 7 and 8 in alinement,
whereby the powder may be poured out in a,
.slot 11, and secured to the plate 3. In Fig.
position shown in Fig. 3 to close the holes 5 and open the hole 7 to ermit the owder to be poured out in a sing e stream on y; and
to be pushed to the position shown in Fig. I
j the margin of the 5 to close all of the openings.
,While the construction of the closure as set forth, is preferable since the cover 2 with the movable member attached thereto can be readily removed to fill the box with powder, yet the relative construction and arrange ment of the fixed and movable members of the closure may be varied without departing from the essential feature of the invention.
, It is obvious also that the size and relative arrangement of the openings 5 and 6, and 7 and 8 may be changed to adapt the box to be used with granulated or other divided substances bes'des powder.
The pin 10 and slot 11 constitute stop members which permit a limited rotative adjustment of the plate 3, the arrangement being such that when the plate is at one extreme of its rotative ad ustment, all the smaller openings are open, so that they are adapted to discharge powder simultaneously, the larger openings being closed, as indicated in Fig. 1; and when the plate is at the opposite extreme of its rotative adjustment, all the openings are closed, as indicated in Fig.5,' and when the plate is at an intermediate position, the smaller openings are all closed and the larger openings are open, as shown in Fig.3, so that the box is adapted to discharge a single large stream of powder. It follows, therefore. that a relatively slight rotathe adjustment of. the plate is suflicient to permit either the dlscharge of a number of I charge of a single large stream near the small streams of powder. or the discharge of a single large stream. It will be observed that the smallcropenings are arranged in a group which is distributed uniformly around the center of the cover and plate, so that when saidopenings are unobstructed, they are adapted to simultaneously discharge av number of fine streams distributed over a considerable area. It .will also be observed that the larger openings in the cover and plate are located outside the groups of smaller openings and in close proximity to cover, so that when the larger openings are unobstructed, they permit the discharge of a single large stream of powder close to the margin of the cover, so that the stream may beconveniently-deposited.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A receptacle of the character stated, having a cover and a plate bearing on the cover and rotatively connected therewith, the cover and plate being each provided with a group of smaller openings uniformly distributed around the center of the cover, and' with a single larger opening located outside the said group and in close proximity to the margin of the cover, stop members being provided which permit a limited rotative of the plate, the arrangement adjustment of the openings and stop members being such that when. the plate is atone extreme of its rotative adjustment, the smaller 0 enings of the cover and plate are open, an the larger openings closed; and when the plate is at the other extreme of its rotative adjustment, all the openings are closed; and when the plate is at an intermediate adjustment,
the larger openings are open and the smaller openings are closed, so that a relatively slight adjustment of the plate is suflicient to permit either the discharge of a number of small streams of powder, distributed around the center of the cover, or the dismargin of the cover, cover to prevent any discharge.
In testimony whereof I hate afiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses..-
