HOLDING ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GODFREY PETER SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in holding attachments, more particularly to a class of holders generally used in connection with electric or gas fixtures and for the'purpose of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawings as adapted for use in connection with an electric lamp socket.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my holder looking downwardly. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the holder half open and Fig. 3 a similar view of the holder entirely open. Fig. at is a perspective view of the holder as shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a view partly in sec tion on the line w-m of Fig. 1 showing the application of my holder in combination with an electric lamp.

1616 are bent projections extending from the sides of the lugs or projections 1515 so that it will be observed that the lugs from the concentric jaws slidably interlock thereby providing a bearing for maintaining the relation of the jaws and at the same time providing a means for opening the binding means or inner pair of jaws by the binder or outer pair of jaws when the thumb pieces 8 8 have been compressed to a sufficient degree. 4

17-17 are flanges which may be employed for reinforcing or strengthening the binder 66', and 18, 19 and 20 are lugs or projections opposite the flanges 17l7 on the binder 6-6 adapted to provide a hearing or support for the shade or other article to be held by the holder and these lugs or Specification of Letters Patent.

projections may extend downwardly in a curved lip as shown so that a lamp shade or similar article may be pressed into place without operating the thumb pieces 88.

It will be observed that it is not absolutely essential that the jaws form a complete circle when closed and that the springs and interlocking details of the holder may be of various modified forms of construction. In fact various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

' An application of one form of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 5 where it will be observed that the binding means or inner clamp or elastic collar encircles the waist 21 of the electric lamp socket holding itself in place by virtue of its own elasticity or springiness as maintained by the spring 12, it being understood of course that by making the binding means or inner jaw or collar 10-10 of one piece of springy metal with an opening through one side, the same may hold in place without the use of the spring 12 and suitable locking means therefor may be employed. The supporting flange of the shade or other article to be suspended rests upon the lugs or projections 18, 19 and 20 after the thumb pieces 88 have been released or after the shade has been pressed into place, thus allowing the coil spring 9 to throw the outer jaws 'or binder into closed position.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a holding attachment, binding means adapted to hold said attachment in place, a binder providing support, means for connecting the binder to the binding means, said connecting means permitting said binder to'be operated independently of said binding means and adapting said binding means to be operated by said binder, and means for operating said binder.

2. In a holding attachment, binding means adapted to hold said attachment in place, a binder providing support, means for connecting the binder to the binding means,

said connecting means permitting said binder to be operated independently of said binding means and adapting said binding means to be operated by said binder after said binder has been partly operated, and

means for operating said binder.

3. In a holding attachment, binding means being adapted to holdsaid attachment in place, a binder connected thereto and providing support, a flanged article adapted to be supported by said binder, said binder havi ing depending flared lips whereby same may i be opened by pressing said article against l said flared depending lips.
