exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to seating appliances, and particularly to seating appliances comprising chairs interconnected in series, such as opera chairs.

In devising the improvements, herein set forth, I have had in mind, in addition to.

providing a seating appliance which shall be durable in construction and afford a rigid and substantial support, so to construct the same that a series of the interconnected chairs may be adapted to varying curves and floor inclines and adjustable to varying conditions in reference to space, whereby to se-' cure a more perfect alinement of the chairs with reference to the aisles and economy in seating space.

A further object is to construct the chairs so that they may be shipped to the floor in as compact form as possible and so far assembled that the work and skill required in setting them up will be very materially re-- duced. Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved seating appliance, showing three interconnected chairs; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of one of the chairs, its near side standard being shown in dot and dash outline; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the structure comprising the seat and back; Fig. 4 is a full-size sectional view 011 the line w w of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a simi* lar sectional view on the line wm of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a similar sectional view on the line yy of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a similar sectional view on the line z-z in Fig. 3; and, Fig. 8 is a sectional view illustrating a modification.

In said drawings a designates the side standards each having an arm-rest b and a Suitable base 6 of such character that each side standard, when properly screwed to the floor, will be adapted to resist any forward and backward tilting action; in practice, where the chairs adjoin each other, as in a .row of chairs, it will be understood that each side standard serves for two chairs.

(Z designates the back and e the seat. -According to the present construction, and by preference, the back and seat are pivotally connected together so as practically to constitute one structure, the side standards being separate, and suitable couplings are provided for connecting said structure with the side standards so that the side standards may be first set up on the floor with reference to economizing the space available for a row of chairs between aisles and so that any desirable curvature in such row may be secured. To this end, the means whereby the back and seat are pivotally connected together comprises the brackets f (Figs. 2 and 3). Each bracket is formed in two parts 9 and h suitably pivoted together at 2'. The part 9 is preferably a flat upright casting having on the inside the projections j to which the back may be secured, by rivets, screws or the like is, the lower projection being formed with a stop Z against whichthe lower edge of the back may abut so that in assembling the back with the brackets f the two brackets may be placed in true opposition to each other with a view principally to squarely aline the axes of the pivots t and thus prevent binding in said pivots when the seat is raised orlowered. The part it may be of well known construction, comprising a flange m to which to secure the seat 6, to reinforce the seat, the parts it may be connected at the back by the bar a in a well known manner. Each part 9 is formed with two elongated vertical slots 0 each opening, on the inside of said part, into an elongated socket p, the socket extending at both ends beyond the end of the slot; these are placed the one preferably near the lower end of part 9 and the other preferably near the portion of part g which adjoins the armrest 0 when the chair is assembled, the lower one being thrust somewhat forwardly of the other with a view to bring it as near to the center of gravity of the chair as practicable. My construction results in a compact, substantial and simple type of chair adapted for use as one unit of a row of chairs; each side standard being unitary, and the assem bled hinged backs and seats being likewise so, these parts may be shipped to the floor;

in only two lots, so that all that is then required is to bolt the studs to the side standards. The side standards are .first set up, having properly spaced them with a view to' economy of the available space and to secure. their proper alinement, both as to rows of chairs and with respect to the aisles, and

then the backs and seats secured to them in; the manner stated, the studs, by being pivoted and curved, readily adjusting themselves .to varying conditions of space between said standards.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by;

7 Letters Patent is:

1. The combination of the side standards, the back, the seat, and means for supporting 'the 'bac'k and seat on the side standards comprising hinged brackets, one part of each bracket carrying the seat and the other part carrying the back, and said means-also comprising devices, pivotally attached to the upper and lower portions of said other parts of the brackets, for securing said brackets to the side standards, substantially as described.

' 2. The-combination of side-standards, the back and seat members, and means for supporting one of said members on the side standards comprising an upper and a lower pair of studs curved laterally in a substantially horizontalpl-ane, each stud connecting said :memberand a side standard and being pivoted in one and bearing'in its curved por- 5 .tion against the other, substantially as described.

3. The combination of side-standards, the
