Be it known that I, J AMES IvEs, of Mount Oarnel, in the county of New Haven, and Stateof Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Harness- Buckle and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex'act'description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewof myimproved buckle, with st'aps applied to it. j

The object of this invention is to improve the harness-buckles which are teehnically termed hip-.strap buckles, by constructing the ring and' loop, and the buckle-frame, of one;piecc of metal, or other suitable material, thus greatlyfacilitating the manufacture ofthis class of buckles, and making them stronger, cheaper, more durable, and handsomer, tha'rheretofore.

' The kind of -buckle to which my invention* particu larlysrelates, consists of a common bow and tongue, and a' ring, connected together by a short 'leather strap, and provided with a box-loop,for receiving the endf'of the stap, which 'is' fastenedto the tongue of' the buckle.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation;

In lig 1 of the accompanying drawings, I' have my improved buckle complete', with a single strap, A,`fastened permanently to the ring E, and a strap, B, at-

-tached by the tongue ofthe buckle,-and its end inse'ted through the box-loop D.

Inesome instances, the ring E will have two straps attached; permanently to it, as, for instance, when it is used to conn-ctthe breeching-strap to thebaek strap of harness.

The improvedbuckle consists of a. semi-elliptical' bow, 0, asemicircular or elongated ring, E, an intermediateconnecting-plateor bon-loop, D, on a tongue, b; which latter may he constmcted with a tail-piece, b',"as shown in figs. 2 and 3.

The parts O, D, and E, are produced inone piece,

and may be made of iron or other metal, or of hard r rubber, or any other suitable substanca.

It will be seen, by' reference-to figs. 2 and 3, that" This loop'not only serves the same purpose as the i leather box-loop'in the old form of buckle, but it also serves to strengthen the parte O E, and prevent them from spreading apart or contracting laterally.

Near the inner edge of the flattened sides of loop' D, the tongue b is pivoted, a a being the pivot-connections of the cross-piece c of the tongue.` 'To eifect the-attachment of the tongueto the sides of the buckle, these sides are spread apart far enough to allow the rounded ends of the cross-piecee'to be inserted into the holes made through said sides, after which' the' sides are compressed, to complete the attachment.

Instead' of. constructing the cross-piece c andthe tongue b in one piecegthe tongue may be connected to a fixed cross-bar, so as to move upon the same; and, if desh-able, the relative proportlons of the device may be yaried, so as to admit of the formation of two or more loops, instead 'of one.
