application inea narch 1, 190e. seria; No. 486,771.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN B. Oo'N- RAD vand FRANK SANDER, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, New York, and FREDERIC WARRENHWRIGHT, a
citizen of .the United States, residing at Bronxville, New York, `have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Ty e for Numbering-Wheels, of which theA following is a clear, full, andl exact description. I
The obg'ect of this invention is to rovide an improved'means for holding inp ace removable type in a numbering machine wheel'v for example, such wheels as are used by f the United States Government in printing the bank notes and legal tender certificates-- issued by the Government, articularly for permitting the change of t e alphabetical character which generally precedes the serial number on such examples of paper money.
The main improvements in said wheel which are set forth inthe following specilication and shown in the drawings, consist of simplicity of construction and eihciency in securing a character in place as well as permitting of its ready removalat the proper time, and under the proper conditions'.
The scope of the invention will be pointed pact of being insertedt Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the type. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the catchl holder. Fig. 8 is a section on line 88 Fig. 2. e v
As shown in the drawings, the wheel 1 is provided .with a central opening 2 for` the usual shaft oi' a numbering machine, and
.with openings 3 toreceiverthepins of the usual ratchet wheel not shown. The wheel in the example shown is yp`rovided with nine number sections represented by the iigures within the circles as shown in Fig. 3. The
type itself '4 1s' provided with ashank 5 havvfitted int-o the hole 10 from one direction, and
ing a notch 6 with beveled sides, and preferably a beveled end '7. The wheel between characters one and nino is recessed for the reception ol' the rectangular block 8 of the type 4. T he center of the recess is provided with, a holera round hole prel'e1'ably,-9, to r` ceive and it the shank 5 of the type. Adjacent to the hole 9 We drill through the wheel the hole 10 and provide a communicating opening 11 between the hole 10 and the hole 9. We rovide a circular plug 12 with slabbed slde 13 with a circular hole 14 drilled therein, at right angles to the slabbed side,
which hole 14 is provided with seats or shoulders 15 adjacent to 'the lslabbed side. A spring 16 is inserte-d into the hole 14, and a latch 16 is provided and insertedin the hole 14 at the end oi' the spring. The latch 16 has a cylindrical part oi greater diameter than the hole 11 in the wheel, and it has a project' ing in 17 preferably with a beveled end,
whici projects into the o ening 9, when the latch is in the position o Fig. 5, so that the type can be pushed ast the beveled pin 17 and the pin spring ack in the position as shown in Fig. 2, to engage and resiliently hold the type'in engagement with the'notch 6 ol' the shank of the type. We preferably make thecirc'ular )lng 12 which holds the resiliently. held latclh taper so that it can be be tightly wedged in place.
We claim as our invention:
1. The herein described numbering inachine wheel and removable type therefor, consisting of a t pe having a shank with a notch in the shan r, said wheel being provided with two holes, one for the shankl of the ty e and a second hole at right angles to the hdle for the shank, and openin into the hole for the shank, and a resilient y held latch protruding into said hole for the shank of the type for engagement with the notched shank, said latch and its spring carried in a'plug, said plug being located in a hole in the wheel at right angles tothe plane of the Wheel.
2. The herein described numbering machine wheel and removable type therefor, consisting of a t e having a shank with a notchl in the shanli, said wheel being provided with two holes, one for the shank of the ty e 105 l and a second hole at right angles to the ho e for the shank, andnopening into the hole for the shank, and a resiliently held latch protruding into said. hole for lthe shank of' the type for engagement with the notched shank, said latch and. its spring carried in e. plug, Suid plufT being located in a hole in the wheel at right angles to the plane oi the Wheel, seid hole in the' Wheel being' circular, and Said. plug being circular to' iit, und heving a hole drilled diametrieully through the sinne for the reception of the spring and lteh.
3. The herein described numbering machine wheel :uid removable typel therefor, consisting of a. type having 'a shank with a not eh in the shank, said Wheel being provided with two holes, one for the shank of the type and a seeond hole nl', right angles to the hole for the shank, und opening into the hole for the shank, :ind a resilieiily held latch protruding into said hole-for the Shank of the type for engfigen'ient with the notched shank, seid lnteh and its spring carried in e plug, seid plug beingaT located in :L hole in the wheel at right angles to the plane of the wheel, Suid hele' in the wheel being circular, :ind smid plug being circular to fit, und having si, hole drilled dimnetricully through the sume for he recepien of the spring and latch, :i sent or shoulder for thespring et; one end of the diametri@ hole of the plug.
