Description

K. A. DARROW. momma TABLE.
APPLIOATIO-N FILED FEB. 1,1908, 916,849. Patented Mar. 30, 1909.
THE NoRRIs Patatas ca wsmama, n. cA
'narran sfrnrns KATHERINE A. DARROW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IRONNG-TABLE Application filed February 1, 1908.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE A. DAR- ROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a s pecii'ication,
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ironing tables, and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a table which may be used as an ordinal' kitchen table and when desired may quick y be converted into an ironing table suitable for skirts, sleeves and other articles of wearing apparel 3 second, to provide a structure adapted to occupy small space as a kitchen table and when changed to an ironing table will afford ample surface for the garments and the ironing operations; and, third, to aflord a construction in which the padding on the boards and the parts thereof may be protected from dust and dirt.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists nn the novel features and in the combination and arrangement of parts, all more speciiically described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts throughout the several views, and in whicl A- Figure l is a perspective view of the table opened for ironing operations. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the table as a kitchen table. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail of the slidable engagement of the sleeve board ith the table.
The side and end rails and four legs constitute the main frame of the table.
rlhe numeral 5 denotes the frame, and 6 represents the extension member composed of end rail and two legs with reach 2l attached thereto, and held in normal position by guide 22, and limited in extent of movement by stops 23 and 24. These stops are intended to prevent upward movement of portion 2l.. The stops 23, 24, are short pieces of material preferably of wood positioned transversely on the tops of the parts 22, 22, and having their free ends above the part 21. One side and the leaf of the table Specification of Letters latent.

are cut away at 7 and 28, respectively, to enable the skirt of a garment to be drawn back farther on the padded board. The main portion 8 of the top of the table serves the double purpose of a top of a kitchen table and as the major part of an ironing board, and is removable by disengaging the spring catches 25, which engage with recesses 2G, in the edge of the board 8. The foldable portion 9 is suitably hinged at l0 to the board 8 and each carries padding l2 on one surface for the well-known purpose. rihe end rail of the extension member 6 is lower by the thickness of the foldable portion of board 9 and double the thickness of the padding (see Fig. 2) and, therefore, cross-piece Il is se cured to the under surface of portion 9 near its outer end to make the ironing boardlevel when used as an ironing board. rlhe part 13 may be used to set the hot iron on, and also it may be rotated to secure the part 9 in folded position when the kitchen-table function is to be performed. The part 13 may be secured to the board by means of a screw or in any preferred manner. The part 14 of the top is Afixed to the table permanently, and has hinged thereto leaf l5, which is supported in open position by foldable bracket 16 which is of the well-known construction. The sleeve board 17 is disposed near one end of the table, out of contact with the removable board 8, and is slidably held in position by guide strips 18, and T-headed block 19.
The numeral 20 denotes padding on the upper surface of the sleeve board. The lateral edges of board 8 are provided with recesses 26 suitable for r ceiving the projections on spring catch 25. The ordinary drawer 27 may be employed for any desired purpose.
In operation, assuming the kitchen-table form shown in F ig. 2, when it is desired to employ the table as an ironinO' table, the spring catches will be disengaged and the portion 8 with its hinged portion and padding will be turned over and the spring catches engaged so as to hold the removable portion of the top firmly upon the table, then the iron rest 13 may be rotated suiliciently to release the end of the part 9. The extension member 6 may then be withdrawn to the position shown in Fig. l, the part 9 opened or unfolded to the position shown in Fig. l, with the cross-piece l1 upon the end rail of the extension, when the parts of the C) fvg.
ironing board will he in the same horizontal lane.
l do not limit my invention to the foregoing illustration and description of the preferred form in whioh it has heen embodied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l Claim as new, and desire to seonre hy Letters-haten@ is- 1. In an ironing table, in combination, a table having four legs and an extension memloer and a top composed oi a removable portion, and a iiXed portion with a leaf hinged thereto, the removable portion of the top having a foldahle part hinged to one end thereof and hoth parts padded on one surface, and means to secure the i'ree end of the foldabie part of the top and afford a rest for an iron, substantially as shown and described.
2. in an ironing table, the Combination of a six-legged table two of the legs attached to an extension member, a removable top portion, a fixed top por ion with a leaf hinged thereto, the removable portion having a foldahle portion hinged thereto and padded on one surface, a rotatable iron rest to secure one end of the foldahle portion, anda crosspieee on one surface of the ioidahle portion. ln testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
