Description

lutti-rd [Stairs @anni @Wina A. J.- GIBSON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO W. G. "DAVIS AND J..W. GARRISON, OF SAME PLACE.
LettersV Patent No. 91,225, dated .Tune 15, 1.869; tmtedated .Tune 8,1869.
DEPROVEMENT IN BWG-CUTTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, A. J GIBSON, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improvedOutter-Head for Outting Bungs, of which the following is a full and clear description, which will enable others' skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, irrwhich- Figure 1 is a plan ofmy improvedcutter-heam Figure 2 is au elevation of the same.
Figure `3 is a Vertical section of the cutter-head, taken through opposite cutters.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to and consists in constructing a rotary cutter-head to receive'cutters, -in a manner to give the desired taper to the bung; the cutters being ground' perfectly straight fromtop to bottom, of equal thickness and width, depending upon the angle the cutters are placed to the cutter-head, to form the desired taper or cone-shape of. the bung.
Aisthe cutter-head. B is the mandrel, to which the cutter-head is attached, by means of set-screw O.
D is a ring to fasten the cutters F to the cutterhead A, by means of set-screwsE.
The cutter-head A is grooved ont at equal distances apart, according to the number of cutters to be used,
the depth of the thiclsinessv ofthe cutters at the lower end of the cutter-head.
The cutters F incline inward to the top by letting them into the cutter-head sufficiently to give the de sired taper or coue-sbape to the bung.
The cutters are ground on the front edge, slightly bevelling to give a cutting-edge Jon the inside, and extending out full thickness from the cutter-head, to out through any desired plank.
The ends or points of cutters have a cutting-edge the full thickness, and are ground to give clearance from the `front to the back edges; also the cutters from top to bottom are made thinner on the back edges, to give clearance.
The mandrel B is bored through the centre, to allow a clamp or dog to pass through, to fasten the bung iin the process of cutting.
.I am aware of the patent of John E. Smith, for improvement in machine for making plugs and bungs, patented, December 4, 1866, and do not claim the devices used in saidv machine.
Having fully described my invention,
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cutter-head A and cutters F, herein described, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
A. J. GIBSON.
