Description

'PATENTED JUNE 16, 1903.
C. MOUTHUY. WOODWORKBRS CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED J'AN.29,190B. v
by providing each of the latter in its upper ,face with a transverse slot 14 in which the ber 18 comprising a socket having a depending retaining lug or finger 19, which is adapted to fit within a receiving recess 20 in the outer face of the clamping jaw 6. The head bar 3 has its upper surface lying in the plane of the clamps 5 and 6 and formed with a transverse recess 21 in its upper edge to receive the adjacent end of the holding bar provided with the retaining member 15, and it will be observed that the inner faces ofboth retaining lugs or fingers 16 and 19 have a downward and forward inclination, while the inner walls of the recesses 17 and 20 are similarly inclined or under cut, so that when the retaining devices are fitted in the recesses they will be securely held therein against upward movement, thus providing for the firm retention of the bar 13 in applied position against upward vertical strain. The adjustable retaining member 18 carries a set screw 22 to secure it in adjusted position on the bar 13.
One of the frame bars 1 or 2, or both, if desired, is provided with a scale 24 by which the clamps 5 and 6 may be adjusted relative to each other to clamp a panel of any determined width within the limits of the clamp, which may be made of any desired size to suit the character of the work to be done.
It will be understood that in the practical use of the device the parts of the panel are laid crosswise on the frame bars 1 and 2 and the clamps 5 and 6 adjusted to engage the opposite side edges thereof to exert a pressure by which the glued joints will be held firmly in contact. After the panel has been set and clamped in the manner mentioned, the bar 13 is applied by fitting it down into the recesses in the bars 3, 5 and 6, engaging the retaining lug 16 with the recess 17, and finally sliding the retaining member 18 until its lug 19 is en aged with the recess 20 and fixing it in suc adjusted osition by the set screw 22. The bar 13 will thus be secured in position to overlie and bear upon the upper SUI". face of the panel, thus preventing it from lifting or its parts from moving out of proper relative position, whereby warping or distortion will be effectually prevented.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A woodworkers clamp comprising a frame, embodying longitudinal bars connected at one end by a cross piece, a pair of clamping bars adjustable on the frame bars,
means connected with the cross piece for adjusting one of said clamping bars, the other clamping bar being free for hand adjustment, means for securing the latter named bar in adjusted position, a holding bar, and means for removably securing said holding bar to the cross piece and to the freely adjustable clamping bar. j
2. A woodworkers clamp comprising a frame embodying longitudinal parallel bars and a cross-bar connecting said bars at one end, sliding clamping bars movable on said longitudinal bars, the said clamping bars and cross piece being provided in their upper surfaces withrecesses, means for retainin the clamping bars in adjusted position, a ho ding bar adapted to be fitted in said recesses, a retaining member on the holding bar to engage the cross piece, and a second retaining member on said bar adjustable thereon and adapt-' ed to engage one of the clamping bars.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
