Be it known that l, WILLIAu \V. HOWELL, a citizen of United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Handles; and 1 do hereby declare the tollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to porcelain and other vitreous knife-handles and means For securing the handles to the knives.

It is the object of the invention to provide improvements in the constructive character of knife-handles and the cooperating parts of knives by which the handles are secured to knives.

The nature of the invention is fully and clearly ascertainable from the device portrayed in the annexed drawings, forming a part oi this specification, in view of wlnch 1t i will first be described with respect to its construction and manner of use, and then be pointed out in the subjoined claims.

It is the purpose of my improvements to make the handle of one piece of porcelain that can be readily cleansed removable and replaceable, and to maintain the handle, se-

curely on the tang oi' the knife when securedin place thereon.

A very material purpose of the invention also, is to make an economical construction and one in which the style or pattern of the handles can readily be changed.

The forward end of the handle will have an angular slot, 10, made therein for the reception of the angular flattened part 4, and the rear end of the tang will be screw-threaded on its upper and lower sides (it being understood that it is rectangular in form and not rounded or made square) as at 11, to receive the interiorly threaded cap nut 12 that is adapted to be turned on the said screwthreaded end, and to fit in the rounded socket 13 formed in the rear of the handle.

The end of the cap-nut is constructed so as to be flush with the end of the handle when screwedupon the rear end of the tang and hence it may be made ornamental to the handle end. The cap nut may be turned on and off the rear end of the tang by mere frictionbetween the thumb and the nut, or the nut may be provided with any well-known feature employed in connection with the heads of screws and nuts for turning it.

The flat sides of the part 4 having angular edges and the rectangular form of the tang, with corresponding recesses in the handle form a construction whereby the handle is kept from turning on the tang or shank of the blade.
