Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. ONEAL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Maryville, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelop- Seals, of which the following is a specification. A

This invention relates to envelop seals, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a seal made from a small piece of paper stock, of simple construction and which will effectually prevent the surreptitious opening of envelops of the ordinary construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive paper seal for envelops which will eifectually prevent the surreptitious opening of envelops, and which will indicate that the envelop has been tampered with in case it is steamed or moistened with a view to opening the same.

Still another object is to provide an envelop seal which may be applied to any ordinary envelop, and which is adapted to contain printed matter such as an advertisement or social message securely held to the rear side of the envelop.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure l is a plan view of an envelop seal made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the rear portion of an envelop with the sealing flap turned upward and my seal in place on said envelop. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the sealed portion of an envelop. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of an envelop having a seal applied thereto in accordance with my invention.

Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an envelop which may be of the usual or any suitable construction, and 2 designates my seal consisting of a rectangular piece of paper having a circular tongue 3 cut from within the body of the blank and connected to said blank by an unslitted portion 4.

5 designates a dotted line or a line of perforations upon which the blank is adapted to be folded, and upon the reverse side of the member 6 of the seal, a suitable advertisement or message mayv be printed. The seal is gummed upon one side, as shown in Fig. 1.

In applying my seal to an envelop, the tongue 3 is moistened and inserted upon the inside of the envelop at a central point so as to hold together the three tongues, a, b and c, after which the gummed portion d of the envelop is secured to the upper member of the seal. The lower member 6 of the seal is then bent upon the line 5 and gummed down to the outer surface of the flap e. The ad# vertisement or message f may be printed in a soluble ink or water color which will run or smear in case the envelop is steamed with a view to opening it.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that my envelop seal may be applied to any envelop, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and provides an efficient and reliable seal against surreptitious opening of envelops.

I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim is:

The herein described envelop seal comprising a piece of flexible material having a tongue of approximately circular form cut therefrom near one end thereof, and a line of fold indicated centrally thereof, in combination with an envelop of ordinary construction, said tongue being inserted within the envelop and gummed inside to the fiaps thereof, said seal being folded on the central line and secured to the outside of the sealing fiap of said envelop.
