Description

*il duits Mm ow MAW GEORGE P.l corn,Y or' HUDSON, MICHIGAN, Laim Patent No. sonoma@ February 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
To all it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Conn, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee, and inthe State of Michigan, have invented certain new'- and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a whip-socket, which will be hereinafterfully l set forth.
'In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, I Vwill now proceed to describe its construction and operation', referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a vertical `side section; and
Figure 2 is a cross-section.
a represents the outside socket, made of leather, or other suitable material, which maybe plain, or ornamented in. any manner desired.
Inside of this socket is placed'a metal cylinder, b, to strengthen the outside'socket and keep it in proper shape. 1
Inside 0f the metal cylinder b is placed a leather cylinder, c, which; is tapering towards the centre; that .is, the centre of the leather cylinder is narrow, 4and widening towards the ends, as shown in iig. l.
Around the narrow centre of the leather cylinder c '-is'placed a band, d, of rubber-cloth, or other suitable yielding substance, and the leather cylinder is cut with one lor more slots, `@under the band d, so as to allowv it to open when thewhip is inserted into the socket.`
It will be seen that, as the end of the whip-handle passes down through the leather cylinder c,the narrow portion in the centre will yield, and allow the whiphandle to pass downward, and the spring-band Ll will press the centre of the cylinder against the handle, holding the whip firmly in the socket.
. rIhe upper and lower edges of the outside socket, q., are turned inward over the edges of the leather cylinder c, and the-ed ges afterwards iinished o in any manner desired, thelower end being provided with a bottom, f, witha hole, i, through its centrato allow any Water that may enter the socket to pass out again.
The socket, thus constructed, is secured to the dashboard by means of two open rings, hh, the ends of which are curved, as shown in fig. 2.
These bands are placed around the socket, and tightened by means of screws, m m, the curved ends n 11- securing it'to the dash-board.`
Havingthus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, andl desire to secure by Letters` Patent, is-
In combination with Ithe outside socket a and metal cylinderr b, the tapering cylinder c, and spring-band d,
widening gradually and equally towards both ends, the narrow .portion being longitudinally slotted, -and surrounded by the spring-band, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here unto set my hand, this 26th day of November, 1868. GEORGE P. COLE. Witnesses:
L. R. PEIRsoN, P. SHUMWAY.
