DRAFT-RIGGING FOB RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent,
j Patented Juiy' 2, 13207.
Application filed December 3, 1906. Bedside-346,991.
To all 'uihom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, (Julianne J. Nasn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars, and more particularly to improvements in the construction of the side plates or stop cast ings of the draft rigging.
Railway draft rigging stop castrngs'are subjected in practical use to enormous blows, shocks or strains, and great difficulty is experienced from the draft rigging breaking or giving away at the stop castings or the shoulders thereon against which the followers abut, and in so designing the side plate or stop casting that it will afford the necessary stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, and at the same time be of a form capafect castings, free from casting strains or other defects incident to unequal distribution of metal and varying thicknesses in different parts of the casting, which is.
ordinarily required to be of considerable length and with a straight flat face to fit against the draft timber or sill of the car, and with the necessary bolt holes or bosses for engagementtherewith, and at the same time to possess the necessary strength and stiffness against bending or buckling at the intermediate portions of the casting between thefollowers of the draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft rigging side plate or stop casting, by means of which the difficulties or objections heretofore experienced may be practically overcome or obviated.
timbers of a railway car to which the side plates or stop My'invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result, as herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, of a railway draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation or face view of one of the side plates or stopcdstings. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections on lines 3-3 and 4-4oi Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 55 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing A represents the center sills or draft castings B B of the draft rigging are secured, and A the front or end sill. l
O is the coupler, G the drawbar, G the draw bar strap, yoke or extension, D the followers and E E the tandem arranged springs of the draft rigging.
" The side plates or'stop castings B B are each furnished with a front stop or shoulder b for the front follower to abut'against, and with a middle stop or shoulder b for the two intermediate followers to abut against, and with a rear stop or shoulder-b for the rear follower to abut against, these three s'tops'being all preferably side of the stop casting. Each of the side plates or stop castings B is further provided with intermediate stops or shoulders b to limit the compression of the springs, and the intermediate stops 1) are made hollow, or with double upright walls b b, so that this intermediate portion of the stop casting between the foling or other blows, while at the same time the unequal distribution of metal in the casting at this part will be avoided, and the web of the casting maintained of substantial uniform thickness throughout. The inner wall b of the hollow intermediate stop b is furnished with a bolt hole or opening I) through which the bolt F connecting the stop casting with the draft timber or sill may be inserted, and the back or outer wall I) jection b' to enter a suitable notch or mortise in the draft timber or sill A, and thus relieve the connecting bolts F in part from strain. Each of the side plates upright end flange b at each end, and with an integral upper guide flange b to guide the followers, and with a removable lower or bottom guide G which is removably connected to the side plate or stop casting by bolts g, which fit in slots 1) in the bottom lugs b of the stop casting at the lower ends of the main stops 1) b b Each of the side plates or stop castings may also preferably be furnished with depressions b reducing the thickness of the main web B at certain parts, where it can be done without detriment, and thereby lessening the weight of the casting as a whole. The upright end flanges b of the stop casting are connected to the front and rear stops respectively, by horizontal connecting ribs b By means of the hollow intermediate or spring compression limiting stops, in connection with the open bend or convolution main stops, my new draft rigging side plate or stop casting is adequately stiffened or reinforeed against buckling at the intermediate portions thereof between the followers or the main stops, while at the same time the casting is made of a shape such that the metal is evenly distributed and the casting freed from abnormal thicknesses or bodies of. metal at different portions of its length, so that in the practical production of the same there is little liability for producformed b y'upright open orU-sljaped bends or convolutions b in the main web B of the side plate or stop v casting B, the mouth or opening b of the U-shaped bend or convolution being on the outer or draft timberlowers may be adequately-strengthened against buffof the hollow stop I) is furnished with a boss or proor stop castings Bis further provided with an integral,
' against bnfiing said main web at the intermediate portions of the stop casting, between the followers or main stops, and at the same time prevent abnormal thickness or body of metal at such intermediate portions, substantially as specified.
2. A railway draft rigging, side plate or stop casting.
consisting of a cast web having, upright open bends therein forming the main stops for the followeys to abut against, and provided with hollow intermediate stops to limit the compression of the springs and the front and back up right walls of which hollow stops strengthen and stiffen the'intern ediate portions of the stop castings, substantially as specified.
3. A draft rigging: side plate or stop casting having,- main stops and hollow intermediate stops with front and back upright walls. substantially as specified.
4. A draft rigging side plate or stop'casting, having main stops and hollow intermediate stops, theinner walls of the hollow intermediate stops being furnished with bolt holes or openings iherethroutrh, and the outer walls of id hollow intermediate stops having bosses or projecseams tions to enter the draft timber or sill to which the stop castings are secured, substantially as specified 5. A railway draft rigging side plate or stop casting provided with main stops and a hollow or double walled intermediate step with front and back upright walls, substantially as specified. v
G. A railway draft rigging side plate or stop casting provided with main stops and a hollow double walled intermediate slop, the inner wall of which is provided with a bolt hole, substantially as specified.
7. A railway draft ri ging side plate or stop casting provided with main stops and a hollow double walled intermediate stop, the inner wall of which is provided with a bolt hole and the outer or back wall of which is provided with a boss or projection, substantially as specified.
8. A railway side plate or stop casting having a main web provided with an integral upper guide flange, and how ing upright bends therein to form the main stops, and pro vided with a hollow iniermediaie stop having front and back upright walls, substantially as specified.
9. A railway side plate on stop casting having a main web provided with an integral .upper 'g'uide flange for the followers, and having upright bends therein to form the main stops, and provided with hollow intermediate stops having front and back upright walls said main stops hav ing bolt head receiving slots at their lower ends, and a removable lower guide for the followers secured to said stop casting, subsianiially as specified.
