such as will enable others skilled 1n the arttel. which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this i specification.
. h'ly invention relates to metallic letter seals and has for its object to produce a simple seal made from a single piece of metal suitably bent to form and capable of fastening an envelop or the like ato prevent unauthorized opening, as will hereinafter be more particusarily of a sin larly described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings in which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1, shows an extended flat metal blank having a Fig. 2, is a some of its. parts bent in proper position.

The seal consists preferably but not necesfle piece of sheet metal such as is usually used for such purposes as soft brass or soft iron as the maker may elect to use and consists ofa main long narrow strip 1 having a disk 2 at one end and a locking ring 3 atthe other end, which ring is connected by a short strip 4 to an eyelet l'ortube 5 whose head is surrounded by a number of sharp ended or triangular tongues 6 one of which forms a unit with orv is replaced by the short strip 4.
. The disk 2 is connected by a short strip 7 to a retaining ring 8 having a number of supporting projections 9 preferably having blunt ends. In order [to seal an envelop the anvil is slipped inside the envelop below the flap the back of the envelop coming between lthe anvil and locking ring 3, the flap is then slid under the eyelet as shown in Fig. 3. To effect sealing only'necessitates the striking of the' eyelet head with any suitable instrument, the eyelet cuts through the flap, passes through the locking ring 3, the back of the envelop, the retaining ring 8 onto they anvil l and cuts out twoA small disks from the two layers of paper. The anvil. causes the spreading or upsetting of the under end of the eyelet; atthe same time the pointed bent tongues 6 pass through the envelop flap and engage the conical walls of rings 3 and are bent upward under the flap. The lower end of the eyelet beneath the flap and on the anvil being upset, expands under retaining ring 8 and the conical locking ring 3 is mashed flat the bent tongues 6 lying on top of it, substantially as shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that it is practically impossible to withdraw the eyelet from the retaining ring 8, yas the locking ring 3 immediately above 8 prevents the metallic strip from being unfolded.
In Fig. 6 l have shown a seal having three instead. of four folds or bends having dispensed with the ring 8, the anvil being surrounded by an equivalent means such as the bent over edge 12 of the anvilvdisk 2a and have also dispensed with the bent down tongues 6 around the eyelet head.
I claim:
l. A'letter seal comprising ametal strip having an eyelet at one end and an anvil at IOO the other end, and a locking ring between them, said metal strip being bent-to aline ,the anvil, locking ring and eyelet.
2. A'letter seal comprising a metal strip 'having-an eyelet at one end, an anvil at the other end and a locking ring vbetween them,
said metal strip being bent to aline the anvil, locking ring and eyelet and retaining means adjacent the anvil to engage the end of the eyelet when upset on the anvil` 3. A letter seal comprising a metal strip having an eyelet at one end, an anvil at the other end, and a locking ring between them and means above the anvil to engage the end of the eyelet when upset all formed of a single piece of metal.
4. A letter seal comprising a metal strip7 an eyelet at one end, tongues on the head of the eyelet extending generally in the direction thereof, an anvil on the other end of the strip, a conical locking ring between them and engaging means proximate the eyelet to engage the end thereof when upset.
5. A letter seal comprising a metal strip having an eyelet at one end, an anvil at the other end a locking ring between them and a retainingring connected to the anvil and bent to bring the parts into vertical alinement.
6A A letter seal comprising a metal stripv having an eyelet at one end, an anvil. at the other end., a locking ring between the ends and a retaining ring having supporting projections thereon, substantially as described.
7. A letter seal comprising a metal strip having at one end an eyelet whose head has a number of downward projecting pointed tongues, an anvil at the other end of the strip, a conical locking ring between the eyelet and anvil, and a retaining ring connected to the anvil and having a number ot supporting projections substantially at right angles to the plane of the ring.
A letter seal comprising a metal strip having a headed eyelet at one end, a bead on the under side of the head7 an anvil at the other end of the strip and a locking ring between the ends, said strip being bent to substantially aXi ally aline the anvil, locking ring and eyele't.
9. A letter seal comprising a metal strip having at one end an eyelet` whose head has a number of downward projecting pointed tongues, and a bead on the under side of the hea-d, an anvil at the other end of the strip. and a retaining ring connected to the anvil and having a number of supporting projections substantially at right angles to the plane of the ring.
10. A let-ter seal formed of a single piece of met-al and comprising a strip having an eyelet formed at one end having a serrated head, the alternate tongues of which are bent down, an anvil punched up from theI other end, a locking ring between the anvil and eyelet and connected to both, and a retaining member connected to the anvil and bent over the same, said eyelet arranged to pass through the locking and retaining rings to be upset by the anvil.
