Letters Patent No. 85,508, dated Jaime/ry 5, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IIN WIND-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JOHN BEAOH, of De Ruyter, in
the county of Madison, and State. of New York, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vindmills;
`and I do hereby declare that the ibllowingis a full, clear,
- parts.
In the accompanying drawings- A is the summrting-colunxn;
B is the main shaft;
C is the lntlauce-wlu-.el anu D is the sail.
The sail is made 11p of several sections, ell, (Z2, da, Snc., which are so arranged, with relation to each other, as to form a continuous spiral sail around the shaft B.
The forward edge of each section of the sail is attached to an arm, S, which isseeured to the main shaft- B in a iixed manner, while the rear edge, or corner, c, lig. 2, of the section is left free to swing ina direction parallel to the main shaft B; but this swinging motion is resisted by a spiral spring, j',- one end of which is secured to the sail, and the other end to the cross-bar or brace, g, which connects the outer ends oi two oi' the arms s.
The sections of the sail are made of cloth, orother flexible material, stretched over a frame, which will keep the rear edge of a section extended, but they can be4 made of wood or sheet-iron, and their forward edges hinged to the armss.
The arms s have also a second set of braces, h h, by which they are secured to each other, in addition to the outer braces 1/ y, whichdiold the rear edges ofthe sails to the wind by means ot the springs ff.
The object oi' the balance-wheel O is t0 balance the shaft B on the supporting-column A.
The supporting-column consists in arevolving sleeve, a, having a seat on the exterior upper part of A, and provided with two bearings, b b, for the shaft B, there heilig sufficient space' between the bearings b b for them to straddle the gears m..
The column A has a hole down through its centre, for holding the vertical shaft K, and it is supported on legs, n n, to make room for a gear, k, or band-wheel, which delivers the 'power of the apparatus.
The sail D is always blown around to leeward of the supportiiig-column, and serves both asa vane and sail.
When the wind is too strong, the springs f yield, and (allow the sections or sails to swing more in line with the main shaft B, and thereby present a smaller front to the wind.
By these means I Obtain a mill which is. cheap, simple, and efficient. c
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The swinging sections or sails d, shaft and arms B s,
braces g h, and springs j, all constructed and operating i as' herein shown and for the purpose described.
