no, 844,887. 1 Specification of Application filed April .To all whom it may concern: 1 Beit known that ELMER E. BELLAMY, a the United- States, residing at p] "and citizen of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga tate of Ohio, has inventednew and'useful Improvements in Illuminated Signs, of which thefollowingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in illuminated signs and similar display devices. The object of'the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and practical device of this character in which removable transparencies or signs may beinterchangeably supported so as to display different advertisements or the like in an" attractive manner.
Vt ith the above and other objects'in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. a f
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view got my improved illuminated sign, showing thedoor'at one of its ends in an open position. -'Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view-through the device, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of'one of the illuminated transparencies or signs Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a casing or holder in'which one or more illuminated transparencies or signs'2 holder comprises two open frames 3, which are closed by-transparent glass or the like 4 and secured to the opposite sides of a rectanular body or frame consisting of a top 5, a
, ottom 6, and two ends 7 8, the latter of which ends is hinged, as shown at 9, to provide a swinging door or closure for the casing or holder. Upon the'inner faces of the to 5 and bottom 6 are arranged longitudinalyextending spaced strips or ribs .10, which form guides to slidably receive the illuminated transparencies or signs 2. Each of the latter comprises a rectangular frame 11, which slides between the guides 10 and has secured upon its front or outer face-a transparency proper, 12. The latter may be of any desired form and construction; but, as shown, it is in the form of a perforated sheet of paper or the like, which may be either permanen tly or removably mounted. This sheet I 1 12 forms the sign proper, and its perforations l Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 12, 1907.

are in the form of letters, figures, symbols, or the like, which make up the advertising matter or other matter to be displayed. The perforations are provided to permit the rays of light to pass therethrough from an illuminating device 13, mounted in a reflector 14, which is carried by the rear of the frame 11. This reflector 14 has inwardly-convergin sides, which form a casing to inclose an support the illuminating d ovice 13, which latter may be in the form of an incandescent electric lamp, as shown, or in the form of any other suitable device for supplying artificial light.
By .combining the transparency or sign frame 11 with'the sign pro er, '12, the reflector and the illuminating deviceas ail-integral unit, they may be quickly and easily inserted in and removed from and thus frequently changed to display difl' ferent advertisements or the like.
vice is of simple, durable, and comp inexpensive construction and at the same time very attractive. The holder or casing 1 may be ornamented in any suitable-manner and mounted upon any suitable support. 1 As shown, it is hung from a horizontal rod 15. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily une derstood without requiring a more extended ex; lanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
The dearatively and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without de artmg from the princiiple or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The combination with a casing or holder having an opening therein, of a transparent plate covering said opening, guides within 1 said casing or holder, a removable transpar- 1 ency behind said opening and slidably en- 1 gaged with said guides, a reflector carried by said transparency, and an illnminating device supported within saidreflector.
2. In a sign, a casing or holder having an or ening covered by a transparent plate, longitudinal guide-strips within said casing or 7" the casing or holder 1,
holder, a rectangular frame slidably en'gage'd In testimony whereof I have hereunto set with said guide-strips, a perforated sign upon my hand in the presence-of two subscribing the front of said frame and behind said open Witnesses.
ing, a reflector upon the rear of said frame a ELMER BELLAMY. having inwardly-converging sides, an illumi- Witnesses: v nating device mounted within said reflector, WM. ROTHENBERG,
I and'a closure for said casingor holder. 1 CHAS.- R. MXLLER.
