. Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. I-IAFFEY, of Tiflin, county of Seneca, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in J ug-Tops of which the following is 1 a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce improvements in metallic tops for fragile vessels, and particularly in molasses-jug tops, in which all the metallic parts are assembled and combined without the use of solder and in which improved means are provided for attaching the metallic and the fragile members together.
Inthe accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, Figure Iis a central vertical section of one of my tops in one of its forms of embodiment and of the neck of a molasses-jug to which it is attached, the lid of the top being shown in a closed position. Fig. II is a topplan view of the subject-matter of Fig. I with the lid open. Fig. III is a perspective view of an assembling-cylinder detached, showing the upper part thereof ready for the reception of the collar and rim and before it is crimped. Fig. IV is a view similar to Fig. III, showing a modified form of the assembling member in which said member is incorporated with the lip of the jugtop. Fig. V is a view similar to Fig. I, showing that modified form of embodiment of my invention in which the assembling member shown in Fig. IV is assembled, with rim and collar, and crimped to hold the several parts united. Fig. VI is a sectional View illustrative of a modified means of uniting the collar or top to the jug-neck.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates, by way of example, the neck of a fragile vessel or receptacle, such as a molasses-jug, to which is attached a metallic top. The top consists of a collar 2, a rim 3, and a lid 4, hinged to the rim, as indicated at 5, the lid being preferably provided with a spring-actuating hinge 6. (Shown clearly in Fig. II.) The lid and its hin 'e connection are well understood in the art. t is to the collar and rim and means of assembling the same that my invention directly appertains.
The collar is provided with an inturned annular flange 8, and the rim with a coextensive inturned annular flange 9, which flanges when laid face to face, as illustrated in Fig. I, constitute, in effect, a single annulus of double thickness. For permanently uniting the a11- nuli 8. and 9 in their assembled relations I provide a special assembling member, which preferably consists of a cylinder, as shown in Fig. III and in a modified form in Fig. IV. The assembling member is preferably drawn in one piece of metal in the shape of a cylindrical skirt 10, a crimping-cylinder 11 of somewhat contracted diameter as compared with the cylinder 10, and an intermediate annular shoulder 12, formed by the contraction of the cylinder 11.
In'practice the flange 8 of the collar,which fits snugly around the cylinder 11, is set against the shoulder 12. The flange 9 of the rim is then slipped into place upon the cylinder 11 in close juxtaposition to the flange 8. Then by the aid of a suitable machine well known in the art of sheet-metal working the cylinder 11 is crimpedthat is, lapped or bent over against the outer face of the annulus 9, as shown in Fig. Ithe permanent flexion of the metal of the cylinder 11 serving without the use of solder to hold the several members in their assembled relations, as described. 15 indicates the jug-lip, which, being made of plate metal suitably shaped, is also secured to and made a part of the jug-top without the use of solder. It may, for example, be provided with a crimped bend 16, which, as shown in Figs. I and II, infolds and so by permanent flexion of the metal of which it is composed fastens upon the previously shaped and crimped cylinder 11.
While it is practicable to form the lip 15, as above described, of a separate sheet of metal from the assembling member, I prefer to form it integral therewith, as illustrated in Figs. IV and V. In those figures, 16 indicates the skirt of the assembling member, 17 the shoulder, and 18 the contracted crimping-cylinder, all substantially identical with the assembling member shown in Fig. III, save and except that the cylinder 18 is provided upon one side with an extended portion 19 shaped to constitute the jug-lip. The manner of uniting the assembling member shown in Fig. IV to the collar and rim is substantially identical with that previously described, except that the crimping flexion 20 of the assembling member, which is formed in the upper part of the cylinder 18,

What I claim is 1. In a jug-top, the combination with its .collar and rim provided respectively with corresponding annular flanges, of an annular assembling member, crimped about the edges .of said flanges and thereby securely uniting the collar and the rim, said assembling member being provided with a depending skirt.
2. In a jug-top, the combination with its collar and rim provided respectively with corresponding annular flanges, of an annular assembling member crimpedabout the edges of said flanges and thereby securely uniting the collar and the rim,-said assembling ,member'being provided at one end with a-depend- .ing skirt and at the other .withalip formed integrally therewith.
.3. The combination with :theflangedcollar and rim of a jug-top, ofan assembling member consisting of two-cylindersofdifieren-t diameters and anintermediate shoulder, the smallencylinder being crimped .to-unite the collar and rim together, and the :larger cylinder extending coaxially withthe collar.
4. The combination with a jug provided withinits neck with an internal annular lip, .ofa jug-top :provided withinternaland external coaxial cylinders, the inner cylinder being confined between saidlip andthejugneck, and means :for. securing the jug-top to the-neck.
5. The combination with a jug :provided within its neck with an internal annular lip,
of a jug-top provided with internalandex- 'ternal coaxial cylinders, the inner cylinder being. confined betweensaid lip and the jugvneck, and means for securing the outer. cylinderto thejug-neck.
