Description

No. 836,087. PATENTED NOV. 20,- 1906,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EAR-TAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed February 1, 1905. Serial No. 243.614.
To all whom 2'5 may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH J. GALLA- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Tabs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ear-tabs; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of arts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointe out particularly in the claim.
The object of simple and efficient means for holding the ears against the head, whereby they are warmed from the warmth of the head, the arrangement being such as to obviate covering the ears, as commonly practiced, thereby avoiding any impairing of the hearing.
The above object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of an apparatus involving my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of one of the tabs and a portion of the telescopic spring-band which holds the tab in place. Fig. 3 is a transverse section as on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
' Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the curved spring-straps, whose ends are pivoted together, as shown at 2, forming a sprin metal band adapted to fit the contour of t e back of the head. Each of said straps at its outer end is (provided with a telescopic section 3, adapte to slide between the inwardly-turned flanges 4 upon the end portions of said straps.
Pivoted at 5 to the outer end of each of the telescopic sections 3 is a scroll-shape frame 6, which conforms to the outline of the ear and the invention is to provide,
1 is adapted, because of the tension of the spring-band, to bear against the ear with sufficient force to hold it closely against the side of the head, whereby the ear is kept warm from the heat of the head and at the same time the hearing is not interfered with by any covering over the ear-opening, as when using the common ear tab or mufller.
To provide a pad and at the same time protect the ear from contact with the metal frame 6, each of said frames is provided upon its inner face with a pad comprising an outer covering of felt 7, drawn over a suitable flexible filling 8, the margins of said covering being confined between said filling and the face of the frame 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, by means of the rivets 9, which pass through the frame and filling.
By means of the telesco ic sections at the end of the band said ban may be adjusted to fit any size of head. When the band is in position, it lies close to the back of the head and the frames 6 hold the ear so closely to the sides of the head as to keep them warm.
Byreason of the pivotal joint 2 in the headband said band may be folded so as to occupy but a comparatively small space, while the frames 6 may be turned on their pivots to lie nearly parallel with the band, thereby decreasing the bulk of the package when the device is folded.
Having thus fully what I'claim as new, Letters Patent, is-
In a device for the pur ose set forth, the combination of the curve spring-straps pivoted together at their inner ends, a telescopic section at the outer end of each of said straps, a scroll-shape frame adapted to engage the ear pivotally attached to the end of each of said telescopic sections to swing in the plane of the longitudinal aXis thereof, and a pad upon each of said frames.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH J. CALLAHAN.
