Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 83,322, dated October 20, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GELsToN SANFORD, of Bergen Point, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Sharpening the Glitters of Mowing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved machine, taken in the line .fr v of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the stone.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. j
The object of this invention is to provide an improved machine for sharpening the cutters of mowing and harvesting machines while they areattached to the cutter-bar.
It consists of an angular-faced reciprocating stone arranged to work over a transverse adjustable bed, in which the cutter-bar is supported in such a position that the stone working in the angle between the cutters will bear fair upon the edges of the cutters forming the angle and sharpen them both at the same time.
A represents a suitable bed-frame, provided with recesses or water-troughs B and with ways C.
D represents a rectangular stone or other grinding substance, having an angular lower face, as shown at E, Fig. 8, which is arranged in a frame, F, fitted to slide in the fixed ways C. The said frame F is caused to reciprocate in the ways O by a connecting-rod, G, and crank H, or by any other suitable means.
I represents a transverse bed or support for the cutter-bar, having a groove, K, in its upper face, and supported in a transverse groove in the bed A by the arms L, pivoted at M, and adjustably secured to the frame N. The support I is also provided with a groove in its upper face, under the stone, corresponding with the conguration of the face of the stone.
O represents a presser-wheel, arranged npon the top of the stone in a swinging frame, having a handle, by which the operator may apply the necessary pressure on the stone, either by the hand or by a weight suspended to the said handle. Y
l? represents a circular stone, Xed upon the crank-shaft, to act as a balance-wheel, and also to grind the cutters in case they become notched by striking stones, or from any cause require an unusual amount ot' grinding in any particular place. purpose for grinding other implements.
To grind the cutters with my improved maA chine, the stone-frame is raised sufficiently to place the cutter-bar in the groove K under the stone, and adjusted to the right point, which may be indicated by marks on the support I, for the angular face of the stone to iit into the angle between the cutters. The said support is then so adjusted by the arms L and set screws N that the stone will bear fair across the beveled edges of the cutters. stone is then reciprocated until they are sufiiciently ground, after which it is raised sufciently for the cutter-bar to be moved along to bring the next cutting-edges under it. The operation is continued in this manner until all the cutters are ground.
The recesses B are designed to be supplied with water, and sponges may be introduced at QA to convey the water up to the face of the stone by capillary attraction after the level of the water has fallen below the top of the walls It.
Instead of adjusting the support I to the face of the stone, the stone may, if preferred, be arranged to be adj usted to the cutters.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a holding-bed, I, of a reciprocating grinder, arranged for adj ust= ment relative to one another, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the holdin gbed I., of the adjustable arms L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the bed A, of the It may also serve a good TheM holding-bed I and reciprocating stone D, sub- 6. The combination, with the reciprooatng stantially as and for the purpose set forth. stone D, of the presser-wheel O, substantially 4. The bed B, provided with the Ways G, as and for the purpose set forth.
trough B, and Sponges Q, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. GELSTON SANFORD.
5. The arrangement of the sliding stone D,
connecting-rod G, crank-shaft H, and stone Witnesses:
P, substantially as and for the purpose set WM. F. MCNAMARA,
forth. T. B. MOSHER.
