Description

u @t fcgi/f' uw uw, we. wwwa-amay WILLIAM H. JOHNSON, AOP PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Lems'Patm No. 88,173, zaad 06am 20,1868.
- city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cast Screw- Socket for Brush-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beihg had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists of a cast screwsocket for coniining the handles of sweeping, scrubbing, and whitewashing-brushes to their head-blocks. The socket has longitudinal knife-edge ribs, which force their way into the wood, as the socket is driven into an appropriate hole of the head, to prevent the socket turning around when the handle is screwed into the latter; and it has a ilange around .its front end, which fits against the face of the block, and ears projecting from it, through which screws are passed, which enter the block and secure the flange thereto, thus making the socket fast in its place. l
In the accompanying drawingsl Figure l is an isometrical view of a sweeping-brush with the improved, socket B in connection therewith.
Figure 2 is a cross-section through the centre of the socket B.
.Figure-3 is a face view of the socket B.
Like letters in all the figures indicatethe same parts.
A is the head-block of a sweeping-brush, B is a castl screw-socket, which has aflange, a, around its front end, which is so shaped on its inner face as to `t the surface of the block A, being of the same curve, and arranged obliquely with the socket, corresponding to the angle of 4the hole b, into which the socket is driven. There are ears c c projecting from the ange, through. which screws el d are passed, and enter the block A,
for securing the flange thereto, to hold the socket in its place. I provide for taking the strain off the screws d d, which would come upon them in screwing the handle into the socket, by casting longitudinal knifeedge ribs c on the periphery of thelatter, which force their way into the sides of the hole b, as the socket vis driven therein.
The flange a of the socketB has to be shaped on its inner face to conform to the face of the block A, being either curved or flat, as the case may be, and at right angles with the socket, or obliquely therewith, to suit the direction given to the latter in. combining it with the block.
The socket may also be combinedadvantageusly with the heads of mops, or other articles than those above named, as a cheap and convenient device for securing handles thereto. The thread f of the socket being cast of knife-edge form, so as to make its own counter-thread upon the handle, as the latter is screwed into its place, cheapens the article, while itis also niade a very eflicient holder of the handle.v
4What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cast screw-socket having'a flange, a-ears c c, and longitudinal ribs c, to be inserted in thel body of the brush, substantially in the manner hereinbefore described, and for the'purpose specied.v
In testimony that the above is my invention, Ihave hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 24th day of August, 1868. v
