olw'in tta ital WILLIA M H. NQBLES, OF ST. PAUL, MINNE S OTA. 1 4 Letters Patent No. 82,978, dated October 13, 1868; antcdatcd October 10, 1868.
INIPROVED CAR-,W'HEEL.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, WILLIAM H. NoBLns, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and improved Car-Wheel; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanythere making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the wheel. Figure 2, a face view of the'periphery, exhibiting Figure 3, the side view of the wheeL' My. invention consists in thepeculiar construction of a railway-wheel, the periphery of which is divided by two flanges into three separate treads, one central and twooutside. i I
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains may make and use the same, I will proceed to point out more specifically its construction and operation, and the objects which I propose to The same letters refer to identical. parts in all, the figures.
A represents the wheel, which, with the exception of the tread and flanges, maybe of any of the ordinary modes of construction.
B B are the flanges, and O O G are the treads.
The object of my invention is threefold:
First. To provide a wheel' which may be able to cross from one track to another, on a frog adapted to it, without any jar or oscillation, the outer flanges riding alternately .on facings on the frogs, constructed with special reference to this wheel, in such a manner that The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
the wheel shall at no time (h'op down on the flange- The tracks or frogs, cutting each other at, acute angles it will be evident that my wheel passing over a frog provided with tracks or facings for each tread, wa l pass over the flange-grooves of the other track at df'f' ferent times, one outer flange healing 'on the unbroken rail or facing while the other outer flange crosses the. break, and the reverse: 1
Second. I provide also, by the peculiar construction of my wheel, against accident resulting from the breaks ing-of wheels or rails. The wheel runs on the central tread, so that it is held on the rail on both sides by the flanges B B. In case of breakage of one wheel, or' a rail on one side, the double flange will-still hold the car on the track.
Third. Another advantage resulting from my form of Wheel is, that while the central tread serves for the ordinary bearing on the rail, the two outer form broad surfaces, against which the brake-shoe inaypress while itwedges over and outside of the two flanges, thereby saving the wearing of the main tread of the wheel.
It will thus be observed that my form of wheel combines several distinct advantages in one wheel.
I do not claim a double-flanged wheel, as suchhas been before known; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of thewheel A, with two flanges B B, and three treads O O O, as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
. W. H. NOBLES. Witnesses:
